TV'Scifi Failure

the original Battlestar Galactica.
...back in 1978. They even released the original pilot TV movie to theatres - that's where I first saw it, months before it aired on TV.
Do you think that any networks will start to put 70 min. plus TV pilots in the cinema with cinema digital distribution & digital projection happening more and more now? Maybe a double feature of a film you paid to see and an upcoming TV series pilot without commercials as the double feature?

I would have loved to see the pilots for
Fringe & Alias in the cinema with an audience. JJ Abrahams really knows how to turn a pilot into a almost-feature film.

The first two hours of LOST would have been great at the movies. So would have FLASHFORWARD. I am surprised we dont see that strategy more. In fact, BUCK ROGERS was handled the same way I think.

Don't think Earth 2 has been mentioned yet. I was really into that show back in the day. It has Tim Curry as a bad guy and he's one of my favourite actors. Think I might have had a crush on the main female character, the leader of the group.

Good pick...I thought it started off too slow, and got to soap-operish. But that chick you are talking about was hot...

Deborah Farentino. Yum.

Earth 2 suffered from a true science fiction(genre) depiction of aliens-breaking the Roddenberry rule used in ST about relatable aliens. I think that threw people off. Shame, it had serious potential. Although the little girl screamed too much.

Otherworld suffered from a lack of pro/fan guidance. Great idea but no one really versed in scifi was making decisions for the direction of the show. A situation that has killed more than one good concept/series.

Bionic Woman gets my vote too. NBC could have had this as a scifi series for a while. Cancelled after 8 episodes...strong female lead character [helps with the audience demographics]. Good actress.
You can get Bionic Woman - Volume 1 on DVD though.

I'm not sure what you are saying? Are you saying that the female lead was a good actress?
Yes she was a good enough actress for the part in Bionic Woman just like the other lead actress in Terminator The Sarah Conner Chronicles.
I found the lead actress in the new The Bionic Woman completely bland and unengaging, and her character poorly written.

Then maybe you should not be judging the quality of a show you didn't see at all except for a part of the pilot episode? :shifty:

The pilot episode was simply that bad, in the 'I cannot actually sit through this like I promised S:AAB fans online' sort of bad. I was of the rather tolerant mindset that "Encounter at Farpoint" was watchable at the time, so it was that terrible.

So yeah. A series with a really poor pilot is one that probably justly lost ratings and got the axe, no?
No, if the subsequent series was really good. I have never even seen the S:AAB pilot since I missed the first few episodes (but as I have all the episodes downloaded, I mean to watch them when I find time) so I have no idea if the pilot was really that bad, but I really liked the later episodes. Some of them were excellent, like "Who Monitors the Birds?"

Me too, that's why I asked. What's her name that played Starbuck showed that the British woman couldn't act, and that's why I think the show failed.

I don't think it was that big of a failure, NBC just didn't like the show. There was going to be a completely different feel to a second season NBC wanted, but then they backed out.

Didn't Spielberg produce Earth-2 and Sea Quest? Not to mention Amazing Stories? Not such a great track record there, IMO..
