Misc Poll: Should Prostitution be Legalized?

Should prostitution be legal:

  • Total voters
    90
I can't help wondering if the overwhelming "Yes" vote seen here is fueled more by the darker fantasies of internet folk than by actual political motive.

Why would I, a 51 year old woman, be fueled by dark fantasies concerning prostitution? There are several other women included in the yes vote besides me.

What "fantasy"?

Where I live, the services of a pro are only a phonecall and credit card charge of $300 away. Delivered to your front door.

No fingers pointed at anyone specifically; I just highly doubt that 93% of the U.S. population supports legalized prostitution.

Mark "fantasies" out of the scene if desired, but there is nevertheless something different about the majority of us on this board than the national average, unless I am mistaken.

On a national level, I'd say it probably splits 85% favor, 15% disfavor... problem is that that 15% is comprised of radical religious nuts and ultra-radical feminists... The secure base of both parties.

I thought that it was a given that a star trek themed internet message board doesn't represent an accurate sample of the population at large.

Yes, without a doubt.

Criminalising any activity never reduces it proliferation, just it's subterfuge.

Would I rape if it was legal - no.
Would I murder if it was legal - no.
Would I steal if it was legal - no.

There are bigger issues of humanity in question here.

Especially with the concept of paying for sex.
Well depends on your point-of-view regarding sex.

If you take a purely cynical point-of-view, there really isn't anything such as "free sex" when you get down to the nuts and bolts. Be it monetary or emotional, there's always a "price" to be paid.
Not so. I've had sex without any monetary or emotional impact whatsoever.

I see. So you believe that anyone who doesn't support legalized prostitution is either a religious fanatic or a radical feminist? How open-minded we're being today.

As I said, the cynical point of view. And you could argue-- staying cynical-- that the act of a date that ends in a one night stand is "payment" in a way.

Definitely don't want to confuse their number with the one for Dominoes.

I'm sure if you paid more they'd bring pizza too.

The only other reasons would be a backward, repressive view of sex (which usually goes hand in hand with radical religious views) or they like to legislate their view of morality, and which point they are totalitarian and run counter to the concepts of liberty and freedom this country is founded upon and should move to someplace more to their political liking... like Iran.

Marriage is basically prostitution when you boil it down.

:guffaw: Stop it! I can't take any more! This is almost as funny as "Consumed by the horny populous"! :guffaw:

*pause*

Okay, seriously, maybe it's just a matter of not actually approving of prostitution all that much? Sometimes it's not all that complicated. ;)

Incorrect. You are blocking out vast swathes of middle to upper class people, many of whom are not religious at all. The sort of folks who live more or less the good life, raise 2.5 kids, and send them off to college.

The unmentioned reason is understanding that regulation of our actions is what makes us civilized, builds homes and corporations, and establishes a solid foundation for future generations. It doesn't have to do with religion as much as not wanting to be like a caveman.

It is such evolved thinking that makes someone trade McDonald's for something a little more healthy, or take pride in appearance in order to be just a little more respectable; when a person thinks about saying something rash, but decides to speak courteously instead. It is the human ability and desire to graduate beyond born animal instincts and embrace a higher order.

Most of America believes in fidelity; it is the glue that holds together all organized society. It has nothing to do with faith or extremism.

And why do you not approve? The causality of the disaproval is grounded in something, and that something is the real reason, not simple "disapproval."

Explain.

What is marriage but a contractual agreement where by a man agrees to support, "honor", ect a woman in return for services of child bearing, household services, ect...

Sure, you can "love" the other person, but Marriage is still a contract service agreement with it's own set of terms and agreements.
