Can anyone direct me to a good Robotech forum?

I can find all the mecha stats and stills I could ever want, but I can't find any good discussion forums for Robotech.

I checked out the ones at Robotech.com and Robotechx.com (supposedly two of the biggest/best) and was disappointed both with the lack of traffic and the generally poor quality of posts.

The truth is that there isn't a good Robotech forum right now, IMO.

Robotech is currently "between productions" and Harmony Gold (having been burned three times with Robotech: The Movie, Robotech II: The Sentinels, and Robotech 3000) is now notorious for keeping quiet about future productions until they're officially in the can and ready to roll--no matter how long it takes.

With no new news except that "stuff is in the works," the fans on those boards have gone restless in the meantime...

Good luck. I love Robotech with all my heart for what it was in the 80s when I first watched it; but like most fans of that time, I've moved on to appreciate it for what it was. Shadow Chronicles was a fine attempt, but it just didn't get the traction it needed to restart the franchise.

I'm quite a fan of the component series that were re-written into Robotech, though, and there's places for that discussion today. If you like the Macross part of it and can stand the purists who hate what Robotech did to it, try macrossworld.com.

Try http://macrossworld.com/mwf/ and also the HG and Robotech debates thread that has been running for over 6 years it will enlighten you to how much Harmony Gold sucks and why they should go away so we can get more Macross over here. Robotech is an inert franchise I won't bother with it anymore after the craptacular Shadow Chronicles.

Pretty much outside of websites dedicated to Robotech, you'll find that Robotech is the most hated anime of all time apparently (some wouldn't even call it an anime at all, but "the abomination")...

Why? IIRC Macross was made around 1979 - 80. This was the first series that used mecha as mecha and not as super weapons that beat down bad guys. Also remember that it was not mindless good vs evil. People died. Who was upset when Roy Fokker died?

It's not the original Macross series, but Robotech that gets all the hate (mostly from fans of the original Macross series it appears). And a lot of it has less to do with content but more with Harmony Gold, IMO...

I agree that of Late Robotech has been more or less forgotten by Harmony Gold but I think it was genius to take 3 seperate anime episodes and integrate them into 1 phenomenal series. Kudos to Carl Mackek.

Meh, it's fandom don't try to figure it out.

I love me some Robotech, but I love Macross and think it's a far superior version of the story. Yeah, it's a bitch that it's hard to get any [legal] new Macross stuff in the US-- barring importing and paying out the butt, but it's not a jihad for me it is what it is.

Besides Lynn Minmay is annoying in any language :p

If you look at "The Art Of Robotech" the original sketches of MinMay were quite fetching.

Isn't nothing about looks, it's about personality and voice actor. In both versions (Original, and American) Minmay just comes across as grating on the nerves. Even when I was little and growing up watching "Robotech" on Saturday mornings I was hoping someone would shoot her.

I don't know if "restless" is the right word...in some of the subfora it seems almost "apathy".

I tried to get a discussion going about how big the SDF-1 really was, for example, and the thing petered out after ~15 posts, most of which were of the "official source says [x]" and a link to an amazon site to buy a book.

Maybe I'm spoiled by our own Trek Tech, but I expected a lot more than that...

They COULD have sold it as a series, according to the "making of" viginette, but every network/distributer wanted too many changes (they never said what kind) so they went OVA.

Damn shame because Shadow Chronicles was FANTASTIC...it's what re-ignited my Robotech fandom!

True story: back in the early 90s, I was at a local sci-fi convention. An guy I knew directed me to the table for a anime fangroup and told me to ask about the availability of Robotech on video...I almost had to leave the convention because of the harassment I got from that table. It DID run me out of the main hall for about 6 hours.

Minmay is what I call a "poodle": a skittish, high-maintenance girl that (at least in theory) looks good on your arm. She's also (for most of the series) shallow and self-absorbed. She doesn't show any maturity at all until the last 3-4 episodes.

Yeah, as other people have pointed out already there are several good places to discuss "Macross" and it's sequels but most people don't take kindly to the butchered version that is Robotech. Personally, I own both. I liked Robotech but I have to say I prefer Macross if given a choice, simply because of the fact that I really dislike it when companies alter the original material to that level of extent.

Also I agree that Minmay is a damn irritating character, regardless of which language she's in.

^ "Don't take kindly" is an understatement. I went to the link someone provided above. They have ONE thread where you can talk Robotech, and it's a "bitch about Robotech fans" and "Harmony Gold is the devil" type thread.

No room for me there...

Well, you could try creating a topic over at ANN and see what happens. People there are usually intelligent and reasonable.

Also, the length of the SDF-01 is 1210 meters. I don't think that's ever been in true contention, so I'm not surprised your thread lasted all of 15 posts?

No, it's the material too...if you like Robotech on that forum (and there is only ONE thread you are even allowed to post about Robotech on), you are scum of the earth.

Want to know how Robotech fans are treated in their fora? Like Enterprise fans were treated by the Bashers during the Basher War. Like Browncoats were treated here in Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Like nuTrek fans were treated by the "TOS Purists" in the JJ forum. Like classic Galactica fans were treated by Sci-Fi channel and in the Galactica forum.

In less than two pages, Robotech was compared to the Human Papaloma Virus, and Robotech fans to domestic violence victims. Carl Macek is either a talentless hack or the devil, and Shadow Chronicles was "fanwank" produced by "fanboys" who stole concepts from the unfinished Sentinels series.

When I pointed out that, as a continuation, of COURSE SC would utilize elements from the previous shows, the response was "No, they stole it and it was 'fanwank'!"
