So I saw Serenity on TV this summer one day when I was bored. I really liked it so I decided to watch the whole Firefly series on www.hulu.com. I watched up to episode 9, but then I had to stop watching it 'cause I was too busy with other stuff. And now I went to www.hulu.com and they only let you watch the first 5 episodes.

Does anyone know of any other places on-line where I can see Firefly for free????? I can't find it on www.youtube.com.

Anywho, I really enjoy the series and am sad that it was cancelled (years ago). I'm really behind the times aren't I!

If you can't pirate the stuff yourself than just buy the DVDs, they're worth it.

I'm sure it's around, but I'd just get the dvds. They can be had for around $14 in some places, so it's a bargain deal.

Netflix is your friend. Barring that, chip in the $20 or so to buy it. Firefly certainly isn't as good as its most ardent fans would have you believe. But it's fun, entertaining, and definitely worth picking up on DVD.

That's why I didn't link to the website. Besides, all it contains are recordings from when the show aired----not DVD rips. And it was well-known in online circles before the DVDs came out, yet Fox said nothing.

In my opinion it's in a different category: Promotional. You send people there for them to sample the show if they're not ready to plunk down the money. When they inevitably love what they see, then you suggest the purchase, and most of them go for it.

Thus more sales are generated due to the availability of free downloads than there would be without.

Of course, that strategy only works if the show in question is truly worth the money. And since most shows aren't, the networks have been understandably hesitant to embrace the concept.

If you view that site as promotional... Then you have to view all piracy as promotional. It's really all or nothing here, it's all the same thing: the product for free.

Now, don't get me wrong, I pirate a lot of media. And I would be perfectly fine with allowing members to link to pirated material, but it has to be yes or no, all or nothing otherwise what's the point of having it as a rule?

Eh, you may be right. When it comes to rules, I've always cared more about the spirit than the letter, though. And the spirit is, don't give any of the networks cause to object to anything on the board. Fox has never demonstrated any objection to that site, as evidenced by its continued existence for the better part of a decade.

Still, now that you've gone and drawn attention to it, I should probably edit out the site name.

Although I'm not a fan of the show, I am a fan of the actors, so when I saw it for sale for something like $10 at Wal-Mart even I decided to spend the tenner.

There are shows such as Kindred: The Embraced that are made available on DVD for, like, 10 minutes and then if you miss the boat are only available for $50, $60, even $100 in the collector's market (speaking from experience in trying to find Kindred, and especially - for some bizarre reason - the TV series version of Roger Corman's Black Scorpion). Firefly does not fall into this rarity category, so there's no reason to go the pirate route. Ditto for Serenity which I've seen at places like Wal-Mart for as little as $5 Cdn.

The only thing that I would see holding anyone back is if they're holding out for the Blu-Ray. But I don't see anybody falling over themselves to release such a beast (and part of me is looking forward to the fandom implosion if it turns out they need to redo half the show in high-def CG like they allegedly needed to do with Trek TOS).

I'm actually glad copies of the original airing are still available. They include the intro narrations, which are not on the DVDs, as well as the corkboard transition panels that were Joss' way of "fading to black" without triggering Fox's automatic commercial initiation. Those rips were instrumental in fan grassroots promotion in the days between cancellation and DVD release. I AM kind of surprised that the site hasn't been shut down by now though.

If you don't want to pirate and don't want to buy, I'd suggest checking with your local library system. It's very possible the show is available to borrow. Barring that, ask around your friends? I've been amazed by how many people I know love and own the show - people I never would have guessed would enjoy it.

The DVDs are really priced so reasonably that buying them isn't as much of a hardship as say, buying a season of Trek (then again, there are more episodes in a full season of Trek).

Besides, buying the DVD slightly increases the probability of another movie... (yep, an aging browncoat can dream )
