That said, if the Sioux don't want their name used for the North Dakota athletics, I'd say they have the right to ask the university to stop.
I quite agree with that. I also think the university should comply with said request if that is indeed the majority position of the Sioux Nation.
I'm assuming that's where the complaints against UND (NDU?) originated, was from people in the tribe.
Well, I've done a little reading on the matter.
The issue is incredibly divisive, and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council is evidently considering the issue. As it stands, the name and logo will be retired on Halloween of this year, unless said group wishes to consider the matter via referendum—in which case an extension to November 30 has already been approved.
I'd previously understood that the Sioux of North Dakota were essentially in favor, while those outside the state opposed it bitterly, but evidently it's not so clear cut.
It's in the hands of the tribes, now ... and, arguably, that's the best place for it anyway.
For some reason, I'd lazily equated the Seminoles' attitude with that of the Sioux, when such is obviously wrong. I stand corrected.
