The College Football Thread

Not football, but I don't feel like starting my own separate thread for it - the NCAA record for longest win streak in any sport is 88 consecutive wins. Currently the Penn State women's volleyball team has a streak of 82 straight victories. It would be pretty awesome if they can break that record.

That's certainly cool enough to merit a quick mention here, in my opinion.

Go Lady Lions! :techman:

Texas is right but it's too early to put Iowa in the top 10.

You may prove to be correct.

Still, they're 12th in one major poll and 11th in two others, which means it's likely quite a few writers and coaches have them significantly higher than that (and others, admittedly, quite a bit lower).

They have wins over Penn State, Michigan, Arizona and Northern Iowa, which is ranked #3 in the FCS (and arguably should've beaten the Hawkeyes). That's an excellent resume, in my opinion, and I stand by my ranking.

For now.

USC's Stafon Johnson was released from the hospital today, 16 days after the freak weightlifting accident in which his throat was crushed by the bar.

While he still has a breathing tube and can neither speak or swallow yet, his recovery has been amazing to this point and hope it continues.

Boise St. did not look all that good last night in escaping Tulsa. Does this affect their chances for making it to the title game?

USC enters the Vortex of Evil this Saturday. My grandpa left for South Bend this morning. He was at the Ohio State game too.

A nice big win here would make my weekend. And hopefully set-up a big national game against Oregon.

Let's go Trojans!

I'm rooting for Nortre Dame just because of the whole Pac 10 standings. Other than that, don't really care either way.

Not sure why, but I'm looking forward to the Red River Shootout this year. Bradford vs. McCoy, two heisman candidates in one of College Football's more prestigious games.

Someone once asked Lou Holtz, after a Notre Dame victory he'd attributed to divine intervention, whether he really thought God cared who won a football game.

The lifelong Protestant considered that, and replied, "No ... but His Mother does." :techman:

Thank goodness someone's still calling it by the proper name. That PC pablum of "Red River Rivalry" still irritates me.

You know what?
  • It's the Red River Shootout, the Civil War and Backyard Brawl
  • They're the Florida State Seminoles, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the North Dakota Fighting Sioux
Anyone offended? Too freakin' bad. Stop looking to be offended.

I've never heard anyone complain about the Fighting Irish, and Florida State University has an agreement with the Seminole Nation recognizing their use of the name. As does, I believe, Central Michigan University (the Chippewas)

That said, if the Sioux don't want their name used for the North Dakota athletics, I'd say they have the right to ask the university to stop. I'm assuming that's where the complaints against UND (NDU?) originated, was from people in the tribe.

Yeah, I was getting ready to say, about the Seminoles--doesn't the tribe actually TRAIN the mascot on what everything means and how to do it all properly? And people STILL complain???

It's supposed to snow tomorrow for Penn State - Minnesota. We got about 3-4 inches last night. It's weird seeing deciduous trees laden down with snow.

I quite agree with that. I also think the university should comply with said request if that is indeed the majority position of the Sioux Nation.

Well, I've done a little reading on the matter.

The issue is incredibly divisive, and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council is evidently considering the issue. As it stands, the name and logo will be retired on Halloween of this year, unless said group wishes to consider the matter via referendum—in which case an extension to November 30 has already been approved.

I'd previously understood that the Sioux of North Dakota were essentially in favor, while those outside the state opposed it bitterly, but evidently it's not so clear cut.

It's in the hands of the tribes, now ... and, arguably, that's the best place for it anyway.

For some reason, I'd lazily equated the Seminoles' attitude with that of the Sioux, when such is obviously wrong. I stand corrected.

Oklahoma has had it. Bradford went down on his throwing shoulder in the first quarter on a quarterback sack. He got up, then collapsed clutching his shoulder. I'll be very surprised if he comes back. He's trying to stretch it out, but it's not looking promising.

Say hello to the Landry Jones era. Sam's got a pro career to think about.
