Red Dwarf 10 Announced

The regions are pretty much extinct except for in local news, and the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish variations. Even I can remember when you'd tune into YTV or Granada for example, rather than ITV1.

Mind you, there was never anything good on regionally!

That is true, and usually any time they did pre-empt network shows for regional shows it would be something I wanted to watch.

The government seem to want more regional news and "ultra local" coverage once switchover is done... But isn't that what the internet was supposed to do?

have you seen newspaper websites of small to medium size citys? the ones that do update daily are examples of such poor journalism its not even funny, even more worrying all the websites look exactly the same.

Any video content is record off a mobile phone and sent in via a reader, and is presented raw with no editing, no attempt to make it into more of a report nothing.

But ITV and BBC were doing local sites, until BBC Local got shut down and ITV cut funding.

I guess I was wrong, there's plenty of free to air channels in America, and most look like rubbish too, so who knows, maybe one of the American posters will tell us if they have Dial-a-Tart channels over there.

I watched a little bit of that Youtube video with the sound off. (Jesus, I'm in the library here!) I don't think we have any channels dedicated to that kinda stuff here. Late at night you can see short ads for chat lines but nothing nearly as explicit as what you're talking about. To my knowledge, the U.S. has no dial-a-tart, no TV gambling, & no real estate shows. (Maybe we are really different countries.)

Meanwhile when Hex was shown in the states it was on BBCAm, so like Primeval it became associated with the BBC.

That's what I was going to say. So many non-BBC shows are, in the U.S., either aired on BBC America or are distributed on DVD by the BBC. (Although the Hex DVDs were made by A&E. We still need Season 2.:()

Yeah, I don't think there's anything like that over here, we're a bit prudish. We did experiment with TV quiz shows (not whole channels but programming blocks) a couple of years ago but I think those all fizzled away.

According to wiki the first thing that started it was a show on The Playboy Channel over there, which wasn't really anything like the dedicated channels over here but I guess it showed that some sad people are willing to spend money to call up and see women fiddling with themselves on screen.

No, just keep your expectations low, don't expect Ultimate Comedy Gernius, and it's fine, a bit of fun. All this po-faced "Oh it's so crap!" is just nonsense.

I'll watch it regardless of how funny or unfunny it is, but I am always aware of how good the show can be, so it's disappointing when it isn't.

I can't help feeling that Back to Earth could have been considerably better than it was, but I was just happy to see them all back in character, doing what they love. If there's one thing that does till come across it's how much they love these characters and enjoy playing them. I'd recommend any big Dwarf fan to watch it, if only for that.

I still think the problem with Back To Earth was that Doug Naylor was trying to do something "special" for the fans, and it ended up being a total self referential seeming rehash of past glories rather than something special.

^ The pseudo-metaphysical plot was OK in my book, it could have been executed better but in principle it was fine. The despair squid thing was a problem granted, but I didn't think it was rehashing too much other than that.

I have only seen it twice though, I really could do with watching it again to form a more solid opinion. After all, I (like you I bet) have watched all the old dwarfs so often I could recite the scripts as I watch it.

Yes, and often quote it at random.
The plot could have worked, the despair/joy squid would have worked if it were a single episode instead of a 3 part thing I think. It's just the way it's stretched out and I think in general the writing is fairly poor. But there are good parts to it, funny parts that work really well, even the self referential parts with Craig Charles, but the Dave stuff is kinda meh. The whole Blade Runner thing though, where did that come from?

^ The Priory joke cracked me up, for one of the parts I was most worried about, it turned out to be one of the best handled bits.

The Blade Runner thing was just tribute for the sake of it, it felt rather shoved in, it didn't even parody it really, it just copied it. Copied it pretty well though.

BTW, I tracked down that Bodysnatcher lost episode finally, I can PM you the details if you wish.

No i think you will find it actually sucked monkey balls quite simply.;)

Back to earth was just terrible in looks and humour, its made the origin RD look like it had the production values of a million dollar Hollywood blockbuster, and something else happened, the characters did not seem to gel as the did in all the original RD, i don't know if this is because of the writing , the actor or whatever, they were saying their lines but something was missing, apart from the humor.

Of course this is just my opinion, you might not like it but please don't tell me its nonsense, its as valid just as yours is.

Thanks. I still keep looking at the price of the set every so often, if it'd go under £30 I'd probably buy it.

Good. Now if they would only do the same with Blackadder all would be right with the world.
