Red Dwarf 10 Announced

Jeeze, for all those hating BTE, get a grip, it's a TV show! It may not have been as funny as we'd have liked, but considering the hiatus and half the writing team not there, it wasn't that bad. After being off the air so long, it's hard to come back firing on all cylinders, few shows have doine it.

Like others, I'll be watching, but I'll keep my expectations reined in, and will hopefully be surprised.

Well, to be fair, they've had enough time to write it, plot it and get it right so it does fire. Been a long time since the series ended...

*throws bone*

Dave is the name of a TV channel, the TV Channel that aired the recent Red Dwarf mini series "Back to Earth"

So, there's Dave, ITV and the various BBC's? Any others?

On the subject, and I haven't seen BTE either, does Rimmer being a hologram again get explained? Isn't Death getting kneed in the crotch the official ending? Even the alternate ending shows a human Rimmer, so this confuses me greatly.

I'm still going to add BTE to my RD set.

I agree with the others that "Back to Earth" felt off due to the absence of a laugh track. I think there have been many great comedies over the years that have neither needed nor used laugh tracks, like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Arrested Development, Family Guy, Made in Canada, Scrubs, The Simpsons, & South Park. But a laugh track has been part of Red Dwarf from the beginning. It's simply part of the rhythm of the show. Plus, there are certainly some classic bits from the show that I think would not have worked so well without a studio audience feeding the actors, such as the shrinking boxers from "Polymorph" or Lister & Cat's prison cell scene from "Meltdown." Maybe the reason why "Back to Earth" didn't have a laugh track was because no one found it funny.

The other things I didn't like about "Back to Earth" were that it felt cheap and that it didn't have Holly. I didn't expect Holly to have a big role. But considering the circumstances, it felt weird for Holly to not be there at all.

On the subject, and I haven't seen BTE either, does Rimmer being a hologram again get explained? Isn't Death getting kneed in the crotch the official ending? Even the alternate ending shows a human Rimmer, so this confuses me greatly.

"Back to Earth" takes place 10 years after "Only the Good..." They don't explain anything that happened in the interim or even refer to it. The only thing they do even partially explain is why Kochanski isn't around anymore. But they don't make any references to any of what happened in "Only the Good..." nor do they explain why Rimmer is a hologram again.

I just thought it was really stupid that the new season is supposedly the 10th just because Back to Earth suggested that there was a 9th - which we will never see.

Actually, "Back to Earth" referred to both a 9th & 10th season that we never saw. So if the new season is called Series X, it's because "Back to Earth" is considered Series IX, just as "Children of Earth" is considered to be Torchwood Season 3.

I wonder if the US has its own dail a tart channels?
Well considering if you point the satellite dish east you find plenty of them, and most explicit than ours, I wouldn't be surprised if they do have them. But seen as they don't seem to have FTA satellite channels over there I'm not sure anyone would pay to have those tacky channels.
I guess I was wrong, there's plenty of free to air channels in America, and most look like rubbish too, so who knows, maybe one of the American posters will tell us if they have Dial-a-Tart channels over there.

doesnt Sky have some of those channels on its EPG? they cant just be limited to freeview? Plenty of channels on Sky that people would not pay for out of choice.

more explicit? does that not suggest ours are in some way explicit, the girls dont even take there tops off, I would hardly call that explicit.

Yeah they're on Sky's EPG, but they are free to air channels, they pay Sky to be on there not vice versa.

You've not seen it later at night then? They got a bollocking from Ofcom for getting too explicit at one point and showing women masturbating with exposed genitals, as opposed to still having their knickers on the usual way they do it.

oddly no, I can count on one hand the number of times ive seen those channels. (set up for a joke, if anyone wants it) not heard of them showing naked women, yet alone showing them masturbating

I have a FTA satellite receiver, so whenever I'm going to be using it after I haven't for a while I tend to retune, and there's loads of them, seems like more every time you retune. They're often on the down time of other channels too.
I guess they might have toned it down since they were fined by OFCOM. What I want to know is what sort of person is watching those channels to get off, then decides to call OFCOM and complain when it gets too explicit?
From Wiki
British television regulator Ofcom imposed a £175,000 fine on Look4Love, owners of Babestar TV. In 2006, Babestar had become one of the more explicit free-to-view nighttime channels, containing use of sex toys and oral sex between female presenters, although the content could still just be considered "softcore". Ofcom's problem was actually with Babestar's concentration on the "barely-legal" status of an 18-year-old presenter

to be fair that sounds like it might just be a case of one channel trying to out do the others, or maybe the ones on Freeview are more tame than the ones that are not.

I dont know what im more shocked by, the TV channels or the fact that OFCOM have done something for once, maybe it was an employee of OFCOM who saw it, (it would explain alot)

I retuned my freeview box recently like everyone else, but its not something I do, unless I know there is a worthwhile channel starting.

Surely a conversation on Dial-A-Tart channels deserves it's own Not At All Supposed To Be A Red Dwarf Thread once it's drifted away from the initial premise?

it went off topic, when I listed all the freeview channels (sorry), but yeah maybe I should start a new thread.

I don't think so... for me the conversation was ended there anyway. And it's not like anyone was talking Red Dwarf to drown it out.

Not to drag the thread kicking and screaming off topic again, but why do so many Americans seem to assume there's not many TV channels here in the UK?

Your logic is....

Non-existent? Yeah, that's it. :D

ITL. hypocritically also not talking about Red Dwarf.
