Babylon 5 - I'm finally going to do it

Anybody wanna buy my incomplete VHS collection? :D

Oh wait, that went beyond the rim when the basement flooded. Never mind.

I think it's a little sad when today's generation probably doesn't know what a VHS is.

That sucks about the basement flooding though, even though it probably happened years ago. ;)

Good for you! B5 is one of the few shows I've ever seen that actually rewards repeat viewing. I hardly ever want to own TV shows and I've bought all of B5 and Crusade twice now so I have one to view and one to lend.

Jan

I am still debating if I want the movie collection or not. I actually enjoyed the movies (Including Thirdspace and to a lesser extant River of Souls) but I don't like the fact that The Gathering is not on the series set. Yeah it was a movie, but it was also the pilot and actually played a key role to the development of the overall arc.

True, but it wasn't a part of the first production season, it was a separate film and the series didn't get picked up until after that was made. In fact I think there was about a year or so between the filming of 'The Gathering' and 'Midnight on the Firing Line'.

From a DVD perspective, I think it's also typical for a backdoor pilot movie to be released separately. The BSG miniseries & Caprica leap to mind.

But the BSG miniseries was included in the first season set. Caprica is it's own animal.

I'm with you; I'd like to have had "The Gathering" on the first-season set, maybe the original edit then the special edition could've been included in the movie set. However, "Midnight on the Firing Line" is an effective introduction, almost second pilot, to Babylon 5.

The reason The Gathering isn't on the first season set is historical. WB wasn't sure how well B5 DVD sales would be, so they released a "testing the waters" disc containing TG and ITB.

When that sold well, they eventually got around to releasing season 1, but it wouldn't have made sense at the time to include TG on it-----they were still focused on getting the content out there, not on packaging it cleanly.

Frankly I'm surprised they elected to put TG and ITB in the movies set in Region 1. (They didn't elsewhere.)

It was? News to me mate, mine didn't include it. Mind you, Region 2 does often get the short end of the DVD stick.

Still, I'd say that 'The Gathering' is as much it's own animal as Caprica (though to be fair, we can't really judge until we see the actual series.)
After the Gathering there was a dramatic shift in cinimatography, music, costume, make-up and overall tone. Not to mention the replacement of no less than three major cast members and there are no major plot points that you MUST know going in to the first season that isn't re-iterated at some appropriate point in the series.

Maybe I'm just so used to thinking of it as a separate entity I have trouble seeing why it should be shoved in with season 1.

I'm more irritated that region 2 didn't get a commentary track for ITB.

It's strictly speaking not part of the first season. There was a long period of time between filming it and when the season began production and it wasn't formally marked as S1.

And yes, us region 2 types tend to be screwed, but I've also never met a Fiver in real life so I have no idea how numerous they'd be anyhow.

And here I thought region 1 got screwed. You guys have better packaging, at least on the Star Trek sets. ;)

Yep, there was about a year gap between The Gathering and "Infection", the first episode filmed in season 1. The Gathering started filming around August 1992 and "Infection" started filming late July 1993.

jms once described it this way:

jms said:
The [Gathering] I've always considered to be a preface, or introduction...The Hobbit, if you will, to The Lord of the Rings.

Voices in the Dark (B5: The Lost Tales)

I'll just start by saying the Lochley Storyline? :wtf:

The Sheridan storyline though, was much better ...

felt the same way at first, but on each repeat viewing, the Lochley story got deeper and deeper, and the Sheridan story got thinner and thinner. YMMV.

I just did something I typically never do. I get a big paycheck next week from my work and I was actually recommended to spend the first one and then save on the rest. Well, given this is my second one but really the first big one, I went onto Amazon.com and found that they were selling the Complete Babylon 5 series (the 5 seasons) for a reasonable price (I think $121 or something like that). Well, I didn't want to see it go back up again so I just bought it, and I get free shipping too. In a way, I can't believe I did that, but now I can watch the series on DVD.

I did that as well, managed to pick up all the series and the movies for about $120AUD ($105US), after I'd already watched the series as I loved it to much.

Actually they did. Just not in Region 2. I own a Region 4 copy of The Movies Set which does contain all 5 movies. (including Gathering & ITB).

The oddest thing I find with the DVDs is that Crusade is priced down here at $100 for the Season and it stays at that price while Babylon 5's series bounce between $100 and $20. So I could get Babylon 5 for $20 yet Crusade has less episodes and costs a bundle more.

I probably should still do it, but does anyone actually recommend watching Legend of the Rangers? I've heard some not so very nice things about it and the only positive I know of is it was Katsulas' final appearance before he died. Also, the Rangers became less interesting in Season 5 when it became more open. Not sure if I'm interested in another story.

As for me getting B5, you'd think with Amazon (The actual store, not the marketplace) I would get a non-defective set. Well, that didn't happen. I got the set on Friday, and found out that Season 4 came with two disc 2s. Then found the packaging was already coming apart on Season 5, and the last disc on Season 3 was defective. I'm getting a refund, and trying again through half.com. Hopefully it works this time. Even though now that I think about it, I wonder if I should have bought Farscape instead. Hell, I might get both by the end of the year.

BTW, I know I always bounce this thread back up, but it's really become my place to talk B5 without having to create another one and I'm close to being at 1000 for the first time ever creating a non-sports discussion thread. That's kinda cool.

I shall be very sad when this thread goes away :D On my second years-later viewing of LOTR I actually enjoyed it. Good dialogue, good action, intereresting plot even if it's a total "rerun". I didn't mind it.

I liked Legend of the Rangers and would have liked to see more of those characters. Some fans tend to get hung up on a few flaws and dismiss it completely. As a pilot, I thought it far surpassed 'The Gathering'.

And I'd miss this thread if it went away, too.

I like Legend of the Rangers. It's not perfect, and it's hard to get past the cold open, which is terrible. But it's also not a standalone adventure, so keep that in mind. I have it on DVD, and don't regret the purchase (it was less than 10 bucks, IIRC).

That's pretty much my feeling too. There are some rather significant flaws, but at least there's no gorilla bar tender. ;)

Without spoiling anything, from what I've read over the years I think what some fans get bent out of shape over boils down to three basic things: -

1) The dialogue: For the new characters tends to be a little more verbose than is really necessary, which is compounded by what appears to be a few cases of miscasting (or possibly the result of poor chemistry and/or rehearsal time)

2) The effects: while the quality of the effects are good (hyperspace has never looked better) I gather there were some problems with the old assets that left them with a limited amount of models to work with, as a result the air traffic over Tuzenor appears to consist entierly of White Stars and massively up-scaled Nials (Minbari fighters) that fly backwards. However, that only accounts for a few shots in the whole movie. Oh and for some bizarre reason that even one of the CG artists was confused about, a certain planet that a certain blue space station normally orbits is missing from the final shot.

3) The weapons pod: without spoiling too much, there's this bit where a character operates the ship's weapons are operated from a null gravity sphere with an all-round holographic display. From what I gather the initial concept was meant to have the operator fire the weapons in a calm, almost Zen like manner. In stead what they shot was a very sweaty woman beating her fists into thin air and grunting a lot. Which, aside from looking a little silly, didn't give one the impression of an efficient targeting system, especially not one designed for Minbari use. Probably one of those things that looked good on paper, sounded like a good idea at the time but fell a little flat in execution. Though again, it's only a few scenes in the whole film and it's not THAT bad.

On the positive side the two primary leads (the captain and xo) are well cast and have some very good chemistry, the plot had a lot of promise that touches on some of the legacy from the old series (those wacky first ones again!) I think the thing that you need to remind yourself while watching is that 'To Live and Die in Starlight' was supposed to be a pilot, not a movie in it's own right so there's allot of threads that never get paid off since that was supposed to come later. Like the "hole in your mind" bit from 'The Gathering', there are plenty of seeds planted that would have grown over time, had ther series been picked up.
Then there is of course the final appearance - ever - of G'Kar. That alone to me is worth the price of purchase.

I thought the weapons pod was a good idea and had no problem with the execution. I'd rather have a cool image of the lady hanging in space shooting fireballs out of her hands than somebody sitting at a console flipping a switch.

I like Legend of the Rangers. It's not perfect

I liked it too, and thought it was better than Crusade, but I also think that it's probably a good thing that it didn't go to series. If it had, it mostly likely would have been cancelled partway through it's first year like Crusade was.
