Phaser question

I have recently acquired a TOS Phaser for collection
My question is does anyone have an idea how to carry it as part of a TOS outfit
In the series the Phaser just seem to be attached to the uniform & hangs loose
I don't want to use a holster or tuck it into a belt

In the show, the phasers and communicators were attached to the belt with Velcro patches, which were not in evidence in close-ups on the props, because the conceit was presumably that something more futuristic was being used.

Also, while Kirk typically did nonchalantly tuck his small phaser (the "Type 1" black lump that also fits into the "Type 2" handle) into his trousers, one would assume that he had some sort of a neat little pocket in there. Else the thing would have fallen down his leg whenever he engaged in fisticuffs or passionate groping... The same goes for the communicators.

Perhaps it would be possible to do a little trick with powerful magnets? Sew one to the inside of the pant leg at hip height, and insert another into the handle of the phaser. That is, if you trust you can cut into the phaser without ruining it.

In the first season, two types of belt were used with Velcro patches. The early half of season one, a brown suede belt was used that hugged around the hips and came to a point. There was a switch to a black leather waist belt in the last half of season one.

In the second season, a Velcro phaser "holster" hung loose from the belt or waist (not really obvious how it was attached to the pants). The holster is obvious in the teaser in "A Private Little War" when Kirk and Spock are running away from the villagers. A Velcro patch was sewn onto the back of the pants for the communicators to attach.

In the third season, a Velcro patch was also directly sewn onto the pants for the phaser to attach in the same fashion as the communicator.

As for the phaser itself, it depends on which version you have. If it's a Phaser I, the velcro patch would go on the underside and go on a corresponding velcro patch on the backside of the pants, just a little more forward of where the communicator goes (picture it right above the hip pocket on a pair of jeans; which pocket depends on whether you're right or left handed).

If it's a Phaser II, the on-set props had the velcro on the side of the Phaser I (with a white stripe painted down the middle, in the event that side got caught on camera, hopefully in a medium to long shot). Not the greatest option for a convention costume, where scrutiny will be somewhat higher, so one way, which has done pretty good by me over the years, is to put the velcro lower down, just above the pistol grip (about where your thumb goes when holding the thing). It's pretty close to what was seen on screen, and the velcro isn't as obvious as an authentic reproduction.

If you just want to carry the thing around in street clothes, the pistol grip fits quite nicely in the typical belt loop.

At least one of the brown suede belts survives to this day, and it was the one that Shatner wore. It is privately held.

Middyseafort, good job on your complete and accurate answer. Its so much better than an incomplete, one sentence generic glossover attempt. :techman:

Maybe the 'conceit' was presumably nobody would notice a previous reply was woefully lacking. :guffaw:
