Yeah, I know. That's what comment #2 was directed towards.
It comes as no real surprise that Michael Bay announced today that he will direct Transformers 3 for a July 1, 2011 release date. I'm sure all it took was some money to get him to agree to a 2011 release.
Also, it looks like this one might be written by Ehren Kruger alone.
This makes it even more likely Trek XI will get pushed to 2012.

Hm, too bad... they might have had a chance of finally making a halfway-decent Transformers movie, but with Bay at the helm again, I guess that's not gonna happen.
I thought the first one was good. The second one, however, was stupid and made no sense, but that was because of the script more than anything else.
Well, I suppose I could charitably call the first one fun... in places, but overall I thought it was mediocre. However, it was definitely high art compared to ROTF; I'm not even really sure why I saw it -- morbid curiosity I guess. I payed $3 to see it at my local cheapie theatre a few weeks ago, and I still feel like I was overcharged by about ten bucks. Just a terrible, terrible movie. Like you said, it was stupid and made no sense.

Bay didn't do that; if anything, I think he might have made things worse: the film was filled with sophomoric humour and characters I couldn't give a rat's ass about. Orci and Kurtzman may not be the greatest writers ever, but I find it hard to believe that the same guys who gave us Star Trek were responsible for this travesty. Maybe a large part of it was Kruger's fault, I don't know, but if so, that still doesn't bode well for the next installment.

Yeah, Michael Bay isn't completely blameless. He helped create the two "ghetto" robots in the film, which I considered one of the worst aspects of the film, and probably enough on its own for me to dislike the movie.
As for the writers, it's possible for good writers to dump out clunkers every now and then. It still boggles my mind how Akiva Goldsman went from writing Batman & Robin to winning an Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind in just a few years.

True enough -- that one still gets me too. Like I said, Orci and Kurtzman certainly aren't perfect, but even so, given Bay's track record, I think it's easier --and more accurate-- to blame him for the mess that was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. TF 2 is coming out on DVD and Blue-Ray on October 20th. Trek is not coming out until November 17. A sign that Paramount believes Trek will be a bigger seller on DVD/Blu-Ray
I still think Star Trek could open May 13th or they could push Thor back and move Star Trek to May 20th. However at this rate looks like 2012, I don't understand after the mixed reception for T2 why they want a 3rd one so quick. Transformers 3 will make a lot less than number 2.

TF 3 will fall below 350m Domestic. Trek 2 could hit 400m
Trek 2 will not get 400m and despite a succesful movie I rate our chances of getting pass 300m domestic as 50/50. Unlike Transformers, Star Trek will need to be very very good again to make cash and if so 250-300 domestically will be best. Worldwide could increase but I doubt that increase too much maybe 135-140.

Actually, just going off percentage of total gross that came from opening weekend, it wasn't that front-loaded. It made 27% of its total gross opening weekend. The first Transformers made 22%. Star Trek XI made 29%.
Worldwide, TF3 will still easily make $800-900 million, while Trek XII will make $400-450 million.
No question TF 3 will make a lot of money. To bad the quality will fucking suck

It's happened before: The Matrix Revolutions grossed much less than The Matrix Reloaded, and the domestic total for the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie was noticeably lower than the 2nd film's take (however, it did do better overseas, resulting in the worldwide total not being significantly less than that of its predecessor - well, if you can call around $100 million not too significant, which you arguably can when you're talking about close to a billion dollars

Perhaps, but there's actually a lot less people who have a negative opinion of ROTF than you'd think. I personally didn't like the movie very much at all (although I enjoyed the first one), but almost everyone I know loved it (for some inexplicable reason). It also still got a B+ from Yahoo users.
Even I'll go watch the third one when it comes out.
