A remake of the remake of "The Fly" is planned.

The especially weird part is that David Cronenberg is in talks to direct.

What do you guys think? When I heard they were planning one, I was afraid it'd be another Platinum Dunes disappointment. But with Cronenberg attached, it might be interesting to see how he'd do it today.

I suppose one approach would be to make a period science fiction horror movie, close to the original film or the 1957 novella by George Langelaan. I wouldn't mind another film about a lone scientist who tragically screws around with science he doesn't understand, as opposed to another modern update with another evil corporation as a plot element.

Cronenburg has been consistently great for me, so i'll look forward to anything he does. He hasn't demonstrated a great deal of poor judgment in his career yet IMO.

Seriously now, I really don't get the despair over all the remakes of late. If they're shite then don't watch them, it's not like the originals (and original remakes) are going anywhere.
As I recall the, the 80's had a bunch of remakes of old classic 50's sci-fi/horror B-movies; The Fly, The Thing, The Blob & Invaders from Mars spring to mind and two of those actually turned out to be really good.

Cronenberg has been on a roll lately (much like a fly landing in your Swiss roll ...), with both A History of Violence and Eastern Promises being among his best work. Which bodes well for him revisiting arguably his best known movie.

This is admittedly a slightly odd, even retrograde choice for him but I'm sure he has his reasons. If the 1980s version reflected fears about AIDS, then doubtless he plans to look at modern topics or fears like genetics or viral warfare in this version. And let's face it, even since The Fly, body-shock has remained a feature of his work (e.g. Existenz).
