'meme' is a term coined by Richard Dawkins, it's a 'cultural replicator' in the sense that a 'gene' is a biological replicator. It is an easily remembered, pervasive bit of culture that survives and spreads among a population.

In the internet sense, it is a fad or trend - FAIL pictures, the numa-numa guy, fat Star Wars kid, leave Britney alone, demotivators, LOLcats, 'all your base are belong to us', etc. etc.
