Things in Season One we never heard or saw again...

Just watched "The Battle" in season 1 and Crusher comes into the ready room and calls Riker "Number One". It sounded so weird! I think that is the only time someone other than Picard calls him Number One. I know Crusher never did again.

Well, not in public. :shifty:

I liked it, especially since Picard had his own theme for the first two season that was based on McCarthy's alternate TNG theme.

Yes, and that theme was heard in some third-season episodes as well. Perhaps its most spectacular use ever was in the climactic moments of "Yesterday's Enterprise," when Picard vaulted the rail and kept on firing as the ship fell apart around him. That musical moment sends a chill through me just thinking about it.

Yes, that has to be my favorite Picard moment in all of TNG.

Let's go to the video:

Much more 'muted'/somber in tone but yeah, you're right, same music!

The complete and utter load blowing awe over the holodeck. The first few times they use it they make a huge fuss over the cool 80s...er, 24th century tech.

They tone that down and it only happens later when primitive aliens see it for the first time.
I saw "The Big Goodbye" yesterday and I agree that this "awe" was totally out of place and made no sense.

Also the computer voice wasn't Majel Barrett's, which I rather liked actually.

Picard going out of his way to speak French.
As well as Picard even trying to do ANYTHING French - he seemed to morph into a VERY British officer post season one (and I think it's VERY telling that even the producers and writers essentially gave up on the 'French' aspect of the character quite quickly after season one too).

What gave you that idea? The fact that Picards entire family were French with a British accent just like his?

Well, they did say that Ligonian culture resembled that of Ming China, so they did try to make it something other than an African stereotype. And at least it was an attempt to get away from the pattern of a galaxy populated entirely by white aliens, though they clearly overcompensated.

Cue-for-cue, I consider this one of the best scores to an episode of any TV series I have seen.

It was released on Volume 2 or 3 of the ST:TNG CDs. Dennis McCarthy is the composer.

Then there are the reactions of the entire DS9 command staff in "Trials and Tribbleations", demonstrating the legendary status of Kirk's crew.

This is the best and obviosuly most direct example in the canon of 24th century humans' reactions to the original TOS cast. Granted, the DS9 command crew were standign in for the writers and the fans in this epsiode, but that doesn't change the fact that this episode is canonical, as are their reactions. It's clear: Kirk (at least) is a legend in the 24th Century. The TOS Enterprise is sight-recognisable, and described as 'Kirk's ship' (not 'Pike's ship' or indeed anybody elses).

Generations supports this idea as well, woth with the opening sequence on the E-B and Picard's reactions to him.

Not to mention Nero's reaction when he meets Kirk in the (young) flesh!

I forget where I read it but apparently McCarthy wanted to have a "picard theme" from the start, but was told not to do it. He offered the "alternate theme" never intending it to be used as the actual opening but to develop the genesis of picards theme.

Crusher's head thingy. Yeah it was stupid, but we only did see it once.
 any pictures?

Troi's outift and accent changed a bit
Carpet colors on the bridge (I think)

The carpets on the bridge, IIRC, where changed in every season.

They really needed to install a bathroom.

but would you have heard the BaWHooosh sound of the flushing ( Ala All in the family?)

One of the greatest unexpected lines "Shut up Wesley!"
one that was never used enough!

Not just that, but he never again mentioned anything of French origin -- art, literature, history -- in any of his discussions. Aside from his love of wine from his family, of course. I would have liked it if he quoted Albert Camus, Voltaire, or even Alexandre Dumas a few times, as he constantly quoted Shakespeare instead. In one of the movies, he did mention some of the family history of the Picards. -- RR

There you go. I knew instantly that it was used in this episode, but I don't know if it was used in any others. I liked it.

Also from that episode, Troi's hypnosis device.

I remember watching that episode and thinking, I have that, it's an altered Lazer Tag chest target.

I saw "The Big Goodbye" last night, and that reminded me that we never saw Whalen, the 20th century lit historian again. (He probably asked for a transfer after his crazy captain almost got him killed on the holodeck.)
