SJA Series 2 R1 DVD Release

Was Series 1 of SJA ever released on DVD in R1? I don't recall ever seeing it. It aired on BBC-K here in Canada, but I haven't heard if they (or anyone else) are going to be showing S2. If SPACE could pick it up, then they'd have all 3 of the Whoniverse shows. :)

Yep. :D Invasion of the Bane and the first season, came out last year.

I remember seeing the set at Borders here in the states. I'm actually surprised the second series/season is getting a US DVD release, because I can't imagine the first release was a huge money maker. I could be wrong though.

Is BBC America even planing on broadcasting it? It doesn't really fit in with the rest of their programing. With syfy losing the rights to Doctor Who, I wonder where that leaves them with SJA.

Whatever the situation, hopefully this means the third DVD set will be available in the future. I'll be wanting to pick that one up for sure, since I'm a bit of a completest and there's a certain guest star that makes it a must buy for me.

Good question, especially since SJA isn't even listed on syfy's website anymore.

If any American -- or Canadian -- broadcaster wants to have the show out there before the DVD release arrives, they're going to have to announce it pretty quickly.

Otherwise this is going to be another in a growing number of shows that are DVD-exclusive over here. Personally I'm in favor of more series being produced direct to DVD anyway (a season of SJA likely doesn't cost a lot more than many movies that get released direct to DVD), so if it doesn't get aired before the DVD arrives, I won't be complaining.

As an aside, I saw Anjli Mohindra on last night's episode of Law & Order: UK, though she was playing a character that seemed somewhat older than Rani.

Hmmm, I may have to track that down. I've really enjoyed watching her...uh...work.

SyFy lost the airing rights to Doctor Who? They ran a mid-day marathon just this week. Does this just mean they won't air the new specials/season?

They lost the first-airing rights to the specials but I haven't seen anything that says definitively whether they could air them later or not or what the story is about the next series proper.

As noted, they have definitely lost the first-airing rights for the specials. We're still waiting for confirmation regarding the 2010 season though the way BBC America is promoting it, I think it'll be on BBC America.

The same thing has happened here in Canada. The CBC has lost the broadcast rights to the specials and the 2010 season to the Space network, but they can still air reruns of the first 4 seasons until the spring of 2010, when Space obtains all broadcast rights. The same might be happening with Syfy - they might have some residual broadcast rights for older episodes, but whether they show the 2010 season, or if marathons are possible a few months from now, remains to be seen.

Common sense would suggest that Syfy is done with new episodes. The specials are so closely tied to the 2010 season, there's no reason for them to be separated. So who ever is showing the specials now, it just makes sense that they'll carry over into Matt Smith. Otherwise there's a continuity gap for those who only watch one of the broadcasters.

By the way CBC was treating the series in recent years, it seems more like they let the rights go rather than "lost" them to SPACE, which is why I was a bit surprised when they started showing Series 4 reruns Sundays at 11pm.

Just as a followup to my earlier comments, it does appear BBC America will indeed air Series 5, so it probably means Syfy bye-bye:

There's an enlightening article on this in, appropriately enough, DWIN's magazine, Enlightenment. According to the writer, the CBC changed some head honchos after buying Doctor Who, who apparently literally forgot or didn't recognize that the show was so popular. The writer cites a source that claims some CBC officials weren't even aware of the "co-production" deal... which according to Enlightenment was just an acquisition deal and didn't actually involve any production money or input, unlike The Tudors which apparently had the CBC involved in both aspects.

All I know is -- and as a taxpayer helping fund the CBC I feel completely justified in making this comment -- their handling of Doctor Who from 2006 onward was the most incompetent handling of a production by a major network I have ever encounter, surpassed only by UPN's bungling with Enterprise back when affiliates were allowed to preempt it for weeks on end for local tiddly-wink preliminaries.

Just to bring this back on track for this SJA-related thread, I wonder if BBC Kids will be airing it anymore here in Canada. Not that it matters for much of the country, as Shaw (one of the major cable providers) has apparently dropped BBC Kids!
