Great TV series, lame movies--wasted potential. As Trek movies go, TWOK wasn't so bad, nor was FC. I haven't seen J.J. Trek and don't intend to ever sit through anything like that.

If you don't like it, what on earth are you doing in the Trek XI Forum?

Too much time on your hands??

Khan (one of the greatest sequels ever made) veruses the tribute band.

It killed a few hours I suppose but overall I rather have watched the original cast, or indeed any original cast...

I don't think it's going out of your way to post a comment in a thread that's basically a 'Which is the better Star Trek?' movie thread. If people want to be flippant about it, they can be. Likewise, if others wish to discuss their decision in detail I'm all for that too.

I felt that way, too, but I tried to look at TWOK freshly like I see Trek XI so that I could make a fair comparison. I thought "What if both of these were played side by side and looked at with new eyes?" and for me, Trek XI still wins.

Strange, if I do that, TWOK still wins by far. The character arcs, the story, the villain, the quality of the dialogue, the character's motivations, the soundtrack, the visual effects, direction, editing, emotional impact...

We should look at it in 2 years, when the hype about this totally overrated flick is over. nuTrek isn't going to age well, while TWOK is pretty much timeless.

TWOK for me.

TREK XI was excellent, don't get me wrong - but there were a few odd structural moments and the plot contrivances (I know TWOK has them) seemed to stick out more.

Sulu "I forgot to mention, Pike made Kirk First Officer..."

Everyone Else
"Oh, okay then".

:D

nuTrek isn't going to age well
I'm not sure about that. I think it'll age about as well as Pirates of the Caribbean or something ie. something entertaining that's on every Christmas but is ultimately rather shallow and throwaway.

I'm still in the dark. What made Star Trek XI good again?

This is a good question as I'm at a loss as to why the movie has garnered positive reviews since the choices made in direction and storyline were very poor.

Show me the forum rule where it states that one can only post positive comments about the movie.

No such thing? ... thought so.

Nope, no such rule, but the personal pokes back and forth among several people can stop any time.

Star Trek II shits on Star Trek XI from a great height.
I don't think I'd go quite that far.

As has been pointed out, it might be a little soon to measure the new movie with complete objectivity against the earlier outings, but remember that not everyone holds an equally high opinion of The Wrath of Khan. Khan in particular I find a bit overly cartoonish when placed next to the Khan of "Space Seed", but that's just my opinion.
