fantastic pitchers duel between the yankees and the red sox last night.beckett and burnett were both on their game.a-rod finally came through in the clutch for the yankees.these two teams are both going to go down to the wire for the al east division lead this year.as an aside john smoltz was desiginated for assignment by the sox. as an organization they handled this situation with class.kudos to them.

The Red Sox are officially in a slide. Looks like they'll be in third place in the AL East and lose the wild card lead by the end of the weekend. Great.

Terrible ending...but as a fan of the game....what a great fucking game. Who would have thought it would be 0-0 in the 15th inning...

Both Beckett and Burnett were terrific, as were the bullpens, including a glimpse of OMG 2007 Papelbon, not Sir Walksalot that we have this year.

Tough fucking loss, and they need to turn it around, but still a damn good game.

...and they need to turn it around...
A quality start from Buchholz, but no "turning around" from either the offense or the bullpen. Sox are crashing and burning.

I'm wondering how much of a distraction this Ortiz mania has been in the clubhouse.

Agreed.

I wish I could have been there for A-Rod's homer, but my parents and I needed to get back to our hotel rooms (they refuse to ride the NYC subway by themselves - can't say I blame 'em  ). It was definitely a hard thing to leave that game early.

Just wish Joba would have pitched better the night before. Oh well, everyone has their off days... and I admit I feel sorry for Smoltz as well. :(

He could find a new life working out of the 'pen. I don't think he has enough left to give 6+ innings like a starter, but perhaps he could be converted to a good long man.

Now if only the Sox offense could hit the ball somewhere. Oh well, plenty of season left. :)

  How the hell do you manage to lose two in a row to the Nationals?

The Nationals seem to have gotten their act together. They're hitting well and their pitching is catching up.

I'm really looking forward to going to the Nats/Rockies game later this month!

I also saw that Smoltz got cut. He looked terrible the other night. But he's had such a great career, it's sad to see it go down like that.

OK, so its Yanks-Sox series finale on Sunday Night Baseball tonight, under the lights. Could be the difference between moderate lead and a commanding lead in the AL East. Pettitte vs. Lester in a matchup of solid lefties.

So why the hell is my wife insisting we watch the NFL hall of fame preseason opener between Buffalo and the Titans?!?!? I don't get her sometimes.

And it's eight in a row for the Washington Nationals. Who are these guys, and why haven't they played like this until now?

Well tell them to stop it! If they keep winning and the Mets keep playing like a steaming pile of turd, they'll pass them and the Mets will finish last!

On a side note, all the Red Sox fans are walking around the office like its a funeral. I say good! Misery loves company. Nice not to be the only one complaining about their team's woes.

There are 50 games left...to quote the great Captain Christopher Pike..."Lets punch it!"

For your sake, you better hope Sulu released the parking brake.

It's becoming a 5 team race for two spots and about 7 weeks to go. The Yanks have a comfortable lead, but not insurmountable, and they have 6 left vs. Boston. I don't think the Rays can leap over both of those teams, but have a shot at the wild card.

Texas and the Angels are fairly close in the AL West, and the loser of that division will be right in the wild card chase.

Yeah, I don't want that to happen, either. Oh, Mets...:(

OTOH, it's nice to see the Nats getting things done. This is what D.C. fans have been waiting for- a team worth going to games for! And lately, even when they lose, they're still playing good ball.
