Things you wouldn't like to see return for a sequel

No, just forgiving. The general public may be described like that.

I'm making these comments as a ST fan myself, as I've watched practically every episode of each series and all the movies. Although I'm happy that the ST franchise has been revived, I'm just disappointed with this movie.

But you are also speaking as though your opinion is final and justifying the fanbase's actions around your opinion. Perhaps it is just possible that many fans enjoyed the story and the film and you just happen to have a different opinion?

Get Jim Henson Studios on this bitch! <snip> but the Pig faced guard, too? Nooo!"

Lighten up Frances. The purpose of Trek BBS is to have fun discussing and debating our mutual love: Star Trek. I agree that the movie was dumbed down for the general masses. I'm hoping that now that the time line has been re-booted, we can get back to Trek that is ABOUT something. Trek at its best has been about something, whether it be racism, war, saving the whales or whatever. The best Treks, like all great fiction, has had a moral. The moral of XI is.......villians are bad?
The opening sequences with Kirk being born while his father sacrificed himself to save them was one of the most effective scenes in any Trek. It was intensly dramatic and effective. I really drew one in to the story. But after that, the rest of the movie was really a lot of pointless, mindless action. In order to make the really big money, they felt they apparently felt they had to dumb it down to the point where felt like Lethal Weapon in space. I came away with the same feeling I had when I walked out of the theatre after seeing Star Trek: The Motionless Picture in 1979 - It was great to see the characters back together again for another Trek, and the fx were great, but the story should have been more. I liked the movie, but I was also a little disappointed. It should have been better. I don't remember if it was in this thread or one of the other ones when someone said that Trek could not go on masterbating to its own cannon. I agree with that and I think that Trek has needed some fresh creative blood for a while. I love Trek, and I am hoping that XII will be New Trek's Khan. My expectation is that we will get Lethal Weapon in Space II, but I hope to be wrong. By the way, I thought I was the only one who still remembers Cannon! We used to refer to him as "Fat Mannix".

Ah yes ... great minds think alike! :techman:

Seriously, I felt the opening sequence was very engaging and was my favorite part of the movie. The rest of the movie wasn't very good.

I've been an avid fan of ST for several years but I'm not going to sugarcoat my opinion of Abram's movie.

Agreed, the opening was very effective. I was immediately brought in. The rest of the movie? Mmm....well, it wasn't like it was terrible; it was okay, but it really could have been better. There were some parts that were just way too unbelievabe. I did, however, like the final scene, because now they can do whatever they want to with the story. It was great to have a new, fresh opinion of Star Trek, and I'm glad for that, but it could have been done a little better. Hopefully the sequel will be better.
