TMP or Abram's Enterprise, which design is better?

Yet you're happy to say that I was wrong in saying that my choice of new-Enterprise image was flattering?

Yeah, that was the first shot I ever saw before viewing the movie, and I thought it was horrendous. Plus the shuttle in the foreground mucks it up even worse.
Isn't it supposed to be the big reveal of the Enterprise in all her glory though?

I think the attitude when the movie was in production was to have no ship pron- therefore there was very little "glorious" stuff to work with for promotion.

I am happy to inform you what most users were saying about that particular shot back in the day on the Trek XI forum. Users that otherwise like the new ship, for what it's worth.

If you, personally, find it the most flattering shot, fine by me. Don't care.

Myself,I like this shot more. Not that we have many more pictures of this Enterprise to chose from.

I would have to say the TMP-E is the superior design, it just had more of a realistic meets fantasy feel to her. The new one, i dunno, the curves took away the proud grace of the old design. I like both, neither are my favorite design of the Grand Old E, but the TMP form seemed somehow more mature, more classy and a degree more functional than this newer take on her.

Here are two better looks at it's design:

It's just those nacelles - they're way too big and bulbous.

I also don't like how the neck starts from the back of the ship. It's just a terrible design IMO, sorry : (

I respect your informed opinion.
But you have to admit- it IS different than what you've seen before, at least, right?
Heh, yeah. In fairness, I was rather indifferent to the Defiant when I first saw that but now I love it. I'm not sure that'll happen with this ship.

For my personal aesthetic, the nacelles are far too front heavy and the neck is too far back. Overall it's a nice design but I just find those two issues make for an irreconcilable ship as a whole. But whatever, I was never a fan of the Enterprise D or Voyager, but that never got in the way of my enjoyment of the shows.

more pleasing compared to the old TMP Enterprise, with it's... unrealistic shapes.
Explain.

Just a few random things:

Well, for one, the nacelle struts. If it really needs such sturdy struts in space, for whatever reason, why slant them back in such an impossible weird angle?

Look at the nacelles, impulse engines, torpedo tube, hangar doors; it all looks very dated to me; there's no real reason to have them designed like that; except if you want it to look like some 50's supercar.

The windows are way too small; if having windows presents such a structural problem that they can't be full-sized (from floor to ceiling); then there shouldn't be any windows at all. Now it just looks like it's ~700m, while in actuality, it's half that.

To quote myself: "every design is rooted in it's era of origin, no matter the attempt to be "futuristic." Look at the nacelle struts in TMP refit- at the time it was the cat's whiskers, now, looking back, the RIDICULOUSLY severe slant backward combined with the rather tiny connection to the secondary hull just *reeks* of aerodynamic late-seventies cool, IMO anyway. Not that that's bad, just placeable in time of conception."

Very good point.

Any real spaceship would probably by practically designed (form follows function). As such, it wouldn't look like any Enterprise at all. However, seeing as the Enterprise is designed to be in a show/movie, it should appeal to the emotions; having such a clobbery of shapes as the TMP-E has doesn't appeal to many people. The (new) Enterprise has a much more unified look; even if it doesn't appeal to everybody, it's at the least more likely to.

I have grown up with Trek from TOS on, there are highs and lows when it comes to the ships. Each vessel has its merits and each has it faults (note these are my opinions and not fact) to me. The NX-01 grew on me as did the Ent-D and E as well. JJ's I am still on the fence about.

*But the refit Ent, and the "Big A" (TMP to ST:XI) has my heart, and always will, she is the belle of the ball. :bolian:

*(Evidenced by the 3 foot refit Enterprise hanging from the ceiling of my library at home)

As if 50s cars don't look better than modern cars.

Maybe they shouldn't have windows on planes either.

I have come to like it on equal footing with TMP-E myself. Having the currently available model/toy to play wi- er, EXAMINE doesn't hurt either.:p And finally, I feel the Enterprise is at a really good scale as well!

A most logical 'tude, dude.
