Euros Lyn to direct Doctor Who movie?

According to Rich Johnston, comics' foremost (and really, only) gossip columnist, it looks likely that Euros Lyn will be directing the David Tennant Doctor Who film, due probably in 2011.

While I'm not opposed to Lyn directing a Who feature film, this feels way too much like Star Trek Generations for me to be comfortable.

Johnston's track record with rumors isn't always the best. His sources named Patterson Joseph as the eleventh Doctor. So, this is take-with-a-grain-of-salt information.

I just think it's weird...a Doctor Who movie with a different Doctor than is on TV...I feel a little bad, if this is true, for both Moffat and Smith.

I guess we'll see.

Agreed. I feel very iffy about the whole idea of a movie, especially coinciding with the series but not with the current Doctor.

Star Trek survived from 1989 onward with one crew on the silver screen and another crew on television.

Batman has had an animated series on television quite different from the simultaneous movie version for a number of years now.

Other franchises have supported different "threads" in the past. There's no reason why Doctor Who can't do the same. The BBC tried in the late 80s to launch a film franchise that would have been set at some vague point in the Doctor's future. It's strange to me that they would seemingly be going with an "untold tales" format; I'd think that if they wanted to launch a film franchise with Tennant, they would leave his era on television open-ended.

True. But they weren't playing the same characters.

True. But, the toons audience is aimed at a much smaller audience, while the movies aim to be big blockbusters. I bet most people who went to Dark Knight didn't watch the cartoons.

I agree. It's the untold tales, they've finished and closed off Tennant's Doctor that makes the whole thing feel strange. The Regeneration is about moving forward with the story.

It's like having Kirk die in the TV show, and a new captain is brought on board. And then in the theater stories of Kirk before he died.

It just feels confusing.

I'm not unopposed to it, I just think the whole thing feels weird.

If this is true, I don't think it'll be weird at all. It's like having a TOS movie out while TNG was on the air. The public will understand, no biggie. And, really, what, it'll just be a couple hours of screen time.

I just hope it's a good movie!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is a somewhat unpleasant taste of RTD and Tennant wanting to have their cake and eat it here.

2011 makes me feel slightly better about it, we might well have had 2 seasons of Smith by then (depending on release date) but then that almost makes it even more invalid. Gaurenteed there'll be a (admittedly small) percentage of the film's audience for whom Smith is the Doctor and who might wonder who this skinny fellow is

It isn't like that. As stated, TOS and TNG are two seperate shows with different characters. It would be like Fox made and X-Files movie in 1996 featuring Richard Gere as Mulder whilst Duchovney continued to play him on the telly at the same time!

Are people really so stupid that they can't deal with 11 being the tv doctor, and then a movie featuring an epic untold tale with the 10 in it?

Seriously?

Ok, so maybe it'll confuse the hell out of the Americans, but I think we Brits will take it well in our stride.

I won't find it confusing, I just think it's unnecessary. As Professor Zoom said, the regeneration is moving forward with the story. Yes, there have been multiple-Doctor stories, but that's different. From what I can tell about this movie (and perhaps I'm being presumptuous), it's just going to be the ongoing tales of The Tenth Doctor doing his thing.

It's not a matter of people being confused. It's the old gaurd making a big budget big screen extravaganza whilst the new kids in town are trying to make a name for themselves. Smith has big enough shoes to fill without the incredibly popular last guy popping back up again!

It won't confuse me. Not at all. It just seems strange from a story telling perspective.

In other words: it seems to be about coin. Making lots and lots of money.

Which sure, that's what it's about any way, this just seems a much more cynical way of them doing it.

I don't think it's a case of the old guard hurting the new kids either. If anything, it's cross promotion. Excitment in one will boost interest in the other.

I just hope it's a good movie!

I still think it'll work fine. The public is smart enough to figure this out.

My biggest worries are about RTD unleashed. Yikes!

If it turns out to be an entertaining movie, then we just enjoy it. If not, well, that's a different problem. But understanding that Ten is back would not be difficult to understand.

If it's an enjoyable movie I think we'll just have fun watching it then. I don't mind another chance to see Tennant as the Doctor. If it's not so good, I just forget about it.

Yeah, it may be unnecessary but, shoot, the entire series is unnecessary! This whole thing is just for fun and not about what is necessary.

Mr Awe

Ignoring my thoughts on the merits of a DT movie I usually like the direction on the episodes Euros Lyn has done so that's a good thing at least.

With RTD writing the movie, I'm surprised he didn't get Uwe Boll to direct it.

Doubtful.

Besides, Americans love a prequel to almost anything these days.

I see your point, but Lyn is by far my favorite nuWho director, so if they have to pick someone who did it on TV, I'm glad it's him.

What does this even mean?

Yeah, I like his work behind the camera, too. And, David Carson wasn't a poor choice to direct Generations; I actually prefer his camera work to both Nimoy and Frakes.

It's that the chain of events in this mooted movie feels like the same chain of events that led to Star Trek Generations. Television producer, television writers, television director, all making the jump to a feature film, with an all-new sequel series waiting in the wings.
