I like Graeme all right, but I think he lives and dies with the script to an extent that Lyn doesn't. When Graeme has an excellent script-- "Doomsday" or "Utopia" or The Caves of Androzani for example-- we end up with excellent television. But when he has a middling script-- "42" or The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith or Revelation of the Daleks-- we end up with a middling episode. (Though to be fair, I think he elevates all those stories about their scripts.)
But everything Euros Lyn does, he takes to the next level. "The Idiot's Lantern" is a middling script, but a joy to watch. "The End of the World" is just utterly fantastic, and a lot of it is down to Lyn's direction. Lyn's least successful episode in my eyes is the library two-parter, which is by no means a bad one.
