Euros Lyn to direct Doctor Who movie?

It's rumour, but there seems to be a lot of fact behind the rumour (if that makes sense) and the BBC have very obviously not come out and rubbished it.

I'm still dealing with the fact that there could be a Doctor Who movie let alone with the Tenth Doctor. I don't care which Doctor is starring in the movie as long as it's a good story. I wonder what the plot is going to be since the series finales have been something like a feature film in the first place. A movie would have to be quite epic IMO. I wouldn't mind finally seeing the Time War but that might be too much to hope for.

I really never thought this was going to be a huge movie, it'd be nice if they could make a few movies with a real budget, but I'm no expecting that from this movie.

Actually seeing the Time War would probably prove as much of a dissapointment as actually seeing the Clone Wars was...

^ That could be true...even though I'm enjoying watching the Clone Wars series. It depends on weather or not there are additions or changes to the Time War made to reflect a two hour film...we only have a rough sketch from a magazine article Davies wrote about the War. Along with statements made by the Master and how trustworthy can those be?

Well what else could it be about? What would be able to happen in this movie that would set it apart from any other of RTD's over-the-top OMGSOEPIC!!!1!1one! wankfests, for example?
I really doubt the movie would be that.

The reason is fairly basic. You can't write a movie for the hardcore fans, because there aren't enough fans to justify it or make the film successful. The ideal model would be the new Star Trek movie, which had nods to the past, but which was quite light continuity-wise.

I would expect something with a scale we've not seen on television yet. Probably something like the "The Chase" or the "Key to Time" stories, with the Doctor racing hither, thither, and yon throughout time and space.

So, is this movie for real or just a rumour? I'm not seeing anything that says it's on.

RTD's Agent's Website listed it as his Current Work on his CV before quickly being taken down. This prompted a question to the BBC who confirmed that a script is "in development". And that's as far as concrete facts on the subject go.

A dissappointment that made millions of dollars at the box office, proving that it wasn't dissappointment to all whe watched the prequels.

Ok but I still found it dissapointing- some things should be left vague and to the imagination because usually it works better there.

It could be about any damn thing. It hasn't been written yet.

I don't know, but I'm not a professional script-writer, either. And neither are you. Don't assume you know what's going to be in the damn thing.

^^ True, but we are familiar with a lot of RTD's output. RTD does seem to like "a cast of thousands" when he goes big and epic. Hopefully with a little more care given to a feature film he won't be as apt to go for the easy out solutions (or Deus ex machina if you prefer). At his best he brings out a lot of fun and energy.

But on the other hand, he typically does "Big and Epic" as a culmination, not a beginning. He has a totally different style when he's trying to hook an audience in to something for a beginning. A film for a mass audience would probably have a lot more in common with, say "Smith and Jones" than "Last of the Time Lords". Fandom likes to fixate on the latter, but he does the former just as often.

I guess I'm seeing this as a culmination though: the end of Tennant and RTD. I understand the whole mass audience idea but I don't know how long they could drag out the usual "It's bigger on the inside?" rubbish before getting on with it in a film.

Why him and not Graeme Harper? He's certainly done most of the epic new series stuff as well as some of the best directed classic series stuff. Sure, he has no movie credits either but he's a far more 'theatrical' director IMO.

That's what the big two-part finale at Christmas will be. A movie would be the start of something new.

Again, look at companion-introducing stories like "Smith and Jones" or "Partners in Crime." There's a sense of a big threat, but it's not an epic culmination in the way of "Doomsday" or "The Stolen Earth." I think a film would most likely strike a balance between those two styles.

Ok, what I think would be good to see in such a film...

  1. Make use of the budget to give us something epic, and something new. I don't want to see Daleks invading 21st Century Earth, again. Give us a spectacular alien planet, or a great realisation of the past.
  2. I appreciate the need to appeal to the US market, but don't make the mistake of the TVM and lose what makes Dr Who unique.
  3. Give the Doctor 2 companions and ensure there's a real sense of drama by either killing one off or having one dissapear off in some way, but make it plain that the second companion leaves with the Doctor at the end (and can conviniently pop up in a second film if the first is a success).
Frankly if I was RTD I'd be dropping random companion names into the finale. "Ah I miss my companions, Rose, and Donna and Kathleen and David and Martha..." etc etc. So that then when Gillian Anderson turns up in the film the fans go-- Ah so that's Kathleen.

I'll never understand the belief that a show like Doctor Who needs to generate "drama" by killing or credibly endangering its characters. It's a light-hearted family adventure series; the drama comes from how the protagonists will survive, not if. We don't need the kind of showy TV deaths you get when programmes are trying to prove they're deep.

Anyway, killing a companion won't create a sense of threat for the future; instead, it'll do the opposite, since the next/other companion will clearly be safe from having the exact same fate. Do we imagine that people watching "Time-Flight" had a heightened fear that a dinosaur might eat Tegan or something?

I have a feeling if it's a big budget, they'll use the Daleks or the Cybermen. They'll want to help insure a return...

Now that I think about it, I wonder if a closer analogue might not be one of the standalone, event specials, like "The Runaway Bride", "Voyage of the Damned", or "Planet of the Dead". Those are designed to hit a more casual audience and hook them in for the duration with a nice big spectacle. But in any case, Russell Davies knows what he's doing, and we're not going to end up with a big screen "Journey's End" or even "Parting of the Ways".
