The Fall of the Sheliak...or I surrender to the Abomination.

This thread has proved it to me.

They spiked the commercials with subliminals that have converted the most opposed of us.

We...

We have been assimilated.

no we put them into the blue nacelles, robau and spock shouting threads.
a few were immune but over all it worked well.

after we ran the trail experiment agents from paramounts room 31
took the protopytypes and ran them in the trailers starting with the third one.

they may have perfected the effect with the most recent ads.

Well past midnight now, where he lives -- he may wait until morning to give his reaction.

Since you used the word "abomination" no less than three times in your post, it seems obvious that you've already decided you're going to hate the movie whether you see it or not. So if that's the case, why waste your ten bucks?

I went to the theater after seeing the 97% (or whatever it was at the time) RottenTomatoes rating - and glowing reviews on this site - with a strong, optimistic surety that I was going to love the film.

I really didn't like it.

Perhaps with his low expectations, he will find more to like about it than I did.

...There is nothing in the film that can possibly change the fact that it recasts the Original Crew, which I am absolutely opposed to. And there's no getting around the reboot nature of the film...

So you're saying you'd prefer a film with Shatner and Takei hamming it up, De's and Doohan's corpses lying around, and Nimoy playing both old and young Spock? Yeah, that'd make the film much better.

Frak. I just typed a big long reaction post--and the submit button failed and the whole thing went *poof*! argh.

Short form for now. I'm conflicted. I was expecting to come out either confirmed in my hate, or converted and ready to admit my errors. In fact, I'm...not sure exactly what I think of it. I was entertained--and irritated. Amused...and depressed. Laughed...and ground my teeth. Sometimes both reactions at once over the same scene.
The lensflare issue is no longer funny to me. The film was physically unwatchable in some scenes for me, thanks to the glares and shaky cam crap.

I dunno.
I'll post what I LIKED as soon as I sneak some more computer time at work.

But don't worry, you can post the negative stuff too, would be fanatical of us to only expect positives ;) :techman:

Stuff I liked, Part One:

The music was fantastic. I hadn't given it any thought before going to see the movie, but the music is very effective and a pleasant surprise.

The Narada. In photos and the trailers and such, it looked like a big porcupine in space. Laughable and ugly and totally wrong. In the MOVIE, with all the close ups, internals, music, etc.--it was one big-ass scary Nostromo meets Hellraiser monster. Everything about it said "nightmare" and I found that very effective. Having read the Countdown comic and the explanation of it using Borgtech components, I am able to see past it bearing no resemblence to any Romulan ship previously seen. (The god-awful Reman built Scimitar would be the closest counterpart.)

Nero. The spoilers and a lot of the reviews don't really do him justice as a villain. No Khan, to be sure, but more than just a miner out for pointless and rather incoherent revenge. He HAS a plan. Not just for revenge but for a future for the Romulan Empire without a Federation to hem it in. That made more sense than I'd been led to believe. And he was kind of scary crazy to boot. Unhinged. Psycho. Anyway, I liked him far more than I would ever have expected.

The miner Romulans. Blue collar thugs from Hell. At least they had a different flavor than what Trek normally gives as as Romulans, or as villains in general. They were closer to the industrial-nightmare of the Borg, but without the dehumanizing technological intrusion stuff. Grimy, gritty, grim hell, they reminded me more of the killer in "My Bloody Valentine" than anything from previous Trek mythology.
I liked that. Would've been happy to see a lot more of it.

Gaila. Never underestimate the buxom Green Chick Factor. It's a cliche, but what can I say? I love Orions.

Well, that was a refreshing surprise. :) I like people sticking up for Nero & Co.

Waiting for the other shoe to drop vis-a-vis the NuCast... :p

Ah. Yes. The cast.
I am, as I've said before, totally and utterly against recasting the Original Crew...um...except for Karl Urban. Totally believed that he was Dr. Leonard Mccoy, just younger than we've seen before.

Maybe it's because I'm such a "Shaun of the Dead" fan, but I liked Simon Pegg. I liked his lines and delivery. I liked his character. I did NOT for even a breath believe that was "Montgomery Scott", but I set that aside and just let the character be who he really was on the screen.

Quinto. Y'know, I like Quinto and I was at least a little intrigued when I heard that he'd been cast as "Spock". Have to say, while I found his acting acceptible in most ways, the only "Spock" I saw in that character was...erm...thinking...well, he DID have bangs. And pointy ears.

I never liked Pine. Not just as "Kirk", but just in general. Didn't like him one little bit. Except for the bar scene. That was pretty funny. Everything else, total fail. (for me)

Zoe Saldana is a red hot foxy babe. Let's just leave it at that.
(The scene with her disrobing was appallingly exploitative and shamelessly pandered to the baser instincts of fanboys. Totally worked for me. *shrug* Ladies, in person you would find me courteous, respectful, and I can even pull off "charming"--for brief periods of time. But when it comes to my fantasy entertainment, total Tellarite. not proud, but there it is.)

Cho. ugh.

Yelchin. wince, but I was willing to go along with it as much as I could.

I didn't WANT to like Greenwood's Pike or Ben Cross as Sarek, but I did. Lesson learned.

Hmmm. Gotta stay positive...Oh wow! I loved Rachel Nichols as Gaila. (Green Girl Factor!)
Yes I did!

Okay, glad I wasn't sipping on any beverage at that moment.

I must applaud you for that.

Although to be truly exploitative, she'd have to be wearing something a bit more... exploitative, wouldn't she?

Pine did take me some getting used to given the jarring difference by comparison to Shatner, but his performance did win me over.

As for Quinto, I'd have to respectfully disagree... I thought he nailed the role as much as Urban...

But... but what about the story?

(Color me surprised... so far)

Oh yeah, the inability to make the "V" because he's Russian is ridiculous--Russians make "V" sounds in their sleep, for crying out loud.

But I remember reading he wanted to pay tribute to the original Chekov, so...

Also agreed on Greenwood and (to a smidge less of an extent) Cross.

Cool of you to take the trip, SheliakBob; on the bright side, you didn't spend a half hour in the theater toilet, praying to the porcelain god for a re-reboot. It's not Our Trek - but it's the Trek we have, and it's the Trek we're gonna have. So, beggars and choosers for us. ~shrug~ Had it been anything else, and it hadn't made the money, we may not have had anything in the forseeable future. We don't get assimilated... but we do adapt.

Thanks for taking the big step, going out there and staring the monster in the face. Hope you found out that it wasn't so scary.
