Spoilers for the End of Tennant...

I'm perhaps most struck by how much Timothy Dalton looks like a hirsute Patrick Stewart in that photograph.

Indeed. I at first thought that was Patrick Stewart, given all the rumors about him being on the show.

Am I misremembering that Dalton auditioned for Shinzon in NEM? Because if he didn't he should have.

I also recall hearing some rumors about The Doctor hallucinating, or visiting memories, or in some sort of regeneration fantasy. Don't go getting too excited at the thought of Timelords returning or what not -- remember, this is from the guy who wrote Journey's End; RTD will write stories that make sense if he feels like it.

The Master: Grrrr! I didn't die some how and I'm here to torment you!
The Doctor: No!
Lord Time Lord: Oh by the way -- we're back!
The Doctor: Uh?
(The Doctor opens his eyes and is Matt Smith's Doctor.)
The Doctor. *Whew*. It was all just a bad OH NO DALEKS ALL AROUND ME!
(Cut to credits.)

Whatever else you can say about him, RTD doesn't handwave major plot turns. He won't let details of invented science detain him, but he's not going to bring the Master or the other Time Lords back with an "I'll explain later" moment.

yes he never really fully explained how the Master came back in the first place

Maybe it's like Trial of the Timelord with all the flashback scenes?
or like the flashbacks to the Masters youth in Sound of the Drums.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person who thought Timothy Dalton was Patrick Stewart at first glance..and yes it wasn't really explained how The Master ended up on Uptoia in the first place, just a vague explanation that he escaped the Time War after he became frightened.

No. The Time Lords resurrected him to fight in the Time War, but after seeing the power of the Dalek empire he was so scared that he used a Chameleon Arch, which brought him to the end of the universe. It's all right there in the episodes. It's backstory and Time War-related, so it's not as detailed as the story about his return will be if he's actually coming back, but it's not really "vague" either, and it's certainly not comparable to the non-explanations that the classic series went in for.

thats easy, when he Chameleon Arch'ed himself to become Yana, he somehow "landed" close to the end of time, after that he spent many years living as the human Yana, to moved to Utopia like all the other humans did.

I dont buy the whole "born on the Silver Devastation" stuff some fans seem to think is real, that was just a false memory planted by the Chameleon Arch, like John Smith "memory" of his parents.

And how can Simm return as the Master? Can a Time Lord regenerate into the same body, even if that body has been burned to ashes?
This is Doctor Who we're talking about here. He'll have some sort of crazy explanation for why he's back that will make sense for the show.

Dalton rules, really glad this is true and I hope it's more than a quick flashback!

Dalton as Shinzon would have been great, but he is only about 10 years (if that) older than Stewart so not sure if that would have worked within the confines of the story.

Could somebody please post the pictures in this thread? I can't see them on the original site, and I can't find them anywhere else! aaaarrrrrggghhh!!! :p

Try here.

I'm not terribly excited by this, just a little curious. If I had my way it'd be a return of the Time Lords. Not just because the Daleks have evaded this for so long, but it'd be a refreshing change to have another challenge/someone else to run from for Smith.

Well, it certainly looks interesting, if not promising. Guess we'll find out around Christmas.

I'm just a little bit excited now and I wasn't before.

Thanks for the link, it works for me.

Dalton looks just like Patrick Stewart, uncanny.

Maybe we'll just be flashbacking to Gallifrey in some manner, which could explain Dalton's Time Lord. And how can Simm return as the Master? Can a Time Lord regenerate into the same body, even if that body has been burned to ashes?

You actually think being burned to ashes would stop the Master.

It didn't stop the Master before. He burned to nothing in Davison's Planet of Fire but was able to return!

I can see how Dalton's Time Lord could be a flashback. We've seen them do this before for the Master's ceremony. I hope the Time Lords return. While I've enjoyed the Doctor being the Last of the Time Lords, I'm ready for them to come back.
