A Boy's First Canon Freak-Out

So tonight I'm watching TOS-R with my 12 year old. He's seen the first season of TOS, all of VOY, all of ENT and the first 2 seasons of DS9 (and half the movies and TAS). We're watching "The Changeling". Nomad takes control of the ship and increases the speed to warp 9, warp 10, warp 11..

AND THE KID FREAKS OUT!

"They can't go past warp 10, what about Threshold?! Why was that the threshold in Threshold if they already went to warp 11 in TOS?!"

hahahaha..

So is there any in-universe answer to this one? He was not satisfied with my answer of "VOY ignored this and was in error".
CONGRATULATIONS! he's now a MAN NERD!:techman:

the reason for 'warp 10' being the top is simply because Gene wanted a maximum speed and decided on warp 10. so, Okuda and the other backroom technonerds invented all this BS about steep climbs on warp curves from warp 9 to 10 in order to explain ludicrous speeds in TNG like WNOHGB in season 1 or getting thrown across the galaxy to System J25 in 'Q, Who?'

Actually, a lot of TV shows lack continuity in their own series. A good example is the TV show MASH. In the early seasons, Hawkeye had a sister, then later, he was an only child. Dr Freedman's first name in his initial appearance was Milton, the changed to Sydney. Colonel Blake's wife was first Mildred, and then changed to Lorraine. The dates of the TV show was all screwed up too. For example, they did four Christmas episodes, however, the Korean War was only three years long.

Tell the kid that TOS was written by a bunch of old school hack writers who drank scotch and chain smoked. No one in 1966 ever dreamed that this show was going to be a over forty year phenomenom. Was going to be something like "Lost in Space". This was also decades before the internet, when and where writers can be corrected of their work. There were only three stations back in the day, much less competition.

But no one cares about that! It isn't science fiction!! It doesn't count.

He's under the impression that Trek is a vast multi-layered and multi-coloured tapestry whose writers wove continuity into every scene. He delights in noticing stuff that has echoes in other episodes and series. We just watched First Contact and he was all thrilled when he saw the Phoenix scene that you see in the opening of Enterprise.

He can learn all about those old hacks and Hollywood later.

Ha ha, he has no idea what he's in for! ;)

Check out Khan remembering a guy he'd never met in TWOK. Remus or Romii? UESPA or Starfleet?

Good times.

My favorite canon violation. I'm not sure of the order of this but there's a glaring continuity violation in "The Andy Griffith Show". A famous ep is when Barney wants to join the choir but his singing is really, really bad. But in at least one other episode, he sings quite well. I get a kick out of this.

What does this have to do with Star Trek? I dunno, maybe nothing. I won't claim "Andy Griffith" is Star Trek Onscreen Canon but Floyd's barbershop sure is!
