Gene Roddenberry "de-canonized" TAS a long time ago.
Gene Roddenberry "de-canonized" TAS a long time ago.
I thought somebody re-canonized it, though.
True. I didn't even know TAS existed 2 weeks ago, much less that it was considered as TOS fourth seasona lot of people here haven't watched TOS, much less TAS![]()
Should receive the DVDs this week and I'll watch them after I'm finished with rewatching TOS. That's not going to happen fast since I've watched "Amok Time" only yesterday (that episode is awesome).
I knew that the shot of the city wasn't there when I watched that episode on TV! Granted, it was like 25 years ago but it struck me as "not being there before". It looks beautiful and not too much like CGI. More like traditionnal matte painting that could have been made in the 60's.The remastered "Amok Time" features a shot of the Vulcan city of ShiKahr, looking exactly how it did in "Yesteryear", btw.
Yep. They really did their homework and IMO, that proves that they didn't reboot ST only to make more money. I mean, why loose time in tiny details and references since the movie was supposed to attract new fans to ST, ie people who weren't going to notice those details? For the fan audience? It was sure that we were going to see that movie, anyway. When I watch STXI, I feel a genuine love for ST universe and I think it's a big part of the reason why, even if the movie is flawed, I like it so much. And the blue sashes.. I mean really.. such beautiful attention to detail, details unknown to even many Trek fans is a testimony to the writers respect of this franchise and its fans.
The colors in TAS are beautiful, much like TOS.

So you're a new TOS fan after seeing the movie? I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with TAS...

Let's not get crazy here...of course they rebooted Star Trek to make money...that is the number one reason...maybe even the only reason...either it makes money or its gone. They paid attention to these details because they work and it fits in with the story they're trying to convey..... And Overgeeked brings up a good point too...you can either look at it as them doing their homework and paying homage.....or you can view them as rip off writers taking elements from others work....Hmmmmm makes you think...
Ryan.so which Jeri are you talking about? Taylor or Ryan?
Thanks indranee for replying in my stead while I was watching "Mirror, Mirror"So you're a new TOS fan after seeing the movie? I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with TAS...

Note that I said that it wasn't only to make money, suggesting that it was the main reason but not the only one. I'm a long time ST fan. When I first watched TOS I was 7 years old, and then a teenager the second time. I've also seen all of TNG and DS9 but only VOY's pilot and nothing of ENT (not aired on mainstream TV here).
I'm currently re-watching TOS after 20 years. I am STILL enjoying it.

Yeah, I have to confess not understanding the awe for writers who essentially cribbed things from someone else's work -- not just the idea, but nearly the same words. Is it the idea that they had actually seen TAS?I just rewatched Yesteryear yesterday (lol). I am in awe of how much it was used for the movie!
I think ENT really explored what Sarek says in Yesteryear and took a step beyond the "I am a Vulcan, I do not "feel" anything doctor.." of TOS's Spock. To see the movie continue in this direction is very interesting.
And the blue sashes.. I mean really.. such beautiful attention to detail, details unknown to even many Trek fans is a testimony to the writers respect of this franchise and its fans.
Or that they're hacks who blatantly swipe bits from other peoples' work. And TAS, come on. As pointed out above...

Think there's hate for VOY and ENT, most people simply ignored or didn't even know about TAS. Yeah, that shows respect.

I just re-watched D.C Fontana' s "Yesteryear", one of the best episodes of the animated series. Then I went to see Abram's STAR TREK film again (I liked it more the second time) and I was amazed at how some scenes and dialogue from "Yesteryear" were incorporated into the movie. In both the episode and the film, young Spock is taunted by his peers and reacts with violence. In another scene, older Spock says to his younger self:
"What you do not yet understand, Spock, is that Vulcans do not lack emotion. It is only that ours is controlled. Logic offers a serenity humans seldom experience in full. We have emotions, but we deal with them… and do not let them control us."
I don't have a script for Star Trek XI, but this is very close to what Sarek says to young Spock.
What do other folks think?
then I assume you don't have any awe for Gene Roddenberry? just checking because he "essentially cribbed" the basics of TOS from Forbidden Planet. he even gave it credit.
writers (and all artists) all over the world have derived inspiration (or, as you so delicately put it, "cribbed") from sources prior to their own creation. it's nothing new and it's not plagiarism.
now, if you can point to plagiarism in this case, I'd be interested.
