I have to say, I feel like they were lazy, I feel like it was lazy film-making, they could have decided on a size, and gone with it.
they could have constructed something (which abrahms supposedly has experience with in his "alias", and "Lost" fattened CV) which would have satisfied fans in it's continuity, AND continued to be the film they wanted it to be
but they slacked off
they were too lazy to be consistent (big surprise orci) and just did a job. like someone working at burger king.

Why are you blaming the writers? Wouldn't it be more prudent to go after ILM or the actual designer of the ship?

The phaser turrets appear to be behind the shuttle... the two dots in the darker square.

Do you think the pilots of those shuttles tell there passengers not to look directly at the HEADLIGHTS?
