Good points. I don't even know what Trek is anymore. The only consistency is with the characters.

 

Exactly. The relationship was built around the balance provided by Spock and McCoy.

 

He didn't even know there were ten movies.

 

I like the character and I acknowledge his importance in the "triad".

But pop culture-wise, McCoy has never approached the importance of either Kirk or Spock. I think that is what JJ means.

 

Most of them sucked, so who cares?

I always thought Star Trek was so strong because the triangle is both stable and dynamic -- it has a solid base, but never really looks at rest either.

 

I'm just hoping that the events of this film do not change the dynamic, such as with an angrier Spock.

 

There were only 8 in my book. The Final frontier, and the Motion picture do no exisit. The new movie make it 9, since it was by far the best star trek movie ever. TWOK is a very close 2nd

 

The no movie? Well then we both agree that it was the no Star Trek movie.

For the purpose of the current film Abram's is absolutely right in that the only way to successfully reboot the franchise was to return to the basics.

In a larger sense, though, I would disagree. Kirk and Spock are very important to Star Trek, but Star Trek is bigger than Kirk and Spock.

If that were not so, Star Trek would be a lot less interesting than it is.
