Those new hand phasers (*SPOILERS*)

Surefire

Captain
Captain
Don't read further if you don't want spoilers.......

Anyone notice that on kill, the tip of the barrel glows red and emits red phaser pulses. Then, when set to stun, it looks like a second barrel is used with a blue glowing tip that emits blue pulsed phasers.

I thought that was interesting, and makes more sense ... since a stun beam is probably completely produced in a different way than a kill beam (I've never liked the idea of the same barrel being able to produce NDF energies capable of disintegrating a lifeform, and then being able to produce a beam without NDF just by reducing the power level).

This was actually something I had wanted to see in ENT, to reflect the more primitive state of their technology. It is actually inconsistent with TOS in this case, ut I put it in the same category as the more pronounced warp effect - should have been like that in the first place, so I'll let it slide.

i didnt care for the phaser opticals in this movie.they were too reminiscent of blasters from star wars. i always liked the disintegration effects from tos.i was hoping we would get a similar effect in this film.minor nitpick.

I was under the impression that the red setting was just your basic rapid fire phaser setting and flipping it to the blue setting created a slower but more powerful blast.
So basically the blue setting was more likely to kill.

I liked the redesigned TOS Phaser. I do miss the 'cricket' phaser part, but I think I can live with a rotating stun/kill barrel. :)

I'm pretty sure blue was stun unless Spock is melding with dead guys now.

Overall I like the shape of the nuphaser. The rotating barrel is too gimicky for my taste but I can live with it.

My biggest gripe is the finish. Its all shiny metal with no real textures, especially on the handgrip. Its a little too plain and seems like it would be hard to hold on to.

But I thought the Romulan that got hit by Kirk's blue blast was alive (but unconscious), and Spock tried to meld with him to get info. I don't remember seeing any physical damage to the body either.

From what I saw in the movie, everyone hit with the red blast had sparks flying off them and massive physical damage to their body.

Would have been interesting to see if there is a disruption / disintegration setting that vaporizes the unfortunate person shot-- but none was seeing in this movie.

The blue setting was "stun" the red setting "kill." The sound was even a bit dfferent for the "stun" setting.

I thought it was neat, but I think having the tip simply changing color would've been better than the switch of tips.

I wonder why the emmission color would change from stun to kill. To help the user know what mode it is in?

You'd think it should be reversed-- blue kill, since IIRC blue wave lengths are shorter and carry more energy than red wave lengths.

^^ Let's just hope there are no colorblind redshirts in the 23rd century....

Or things could get really, really messy.

Well if the grip was too good, then Kirk wouldn't have dropped his phaser off the drill over Vulcan, and there would have been no fight scene there.

So I'm happy it's slippery. :)

True!

In fact, there was quite a lot of phaser dropping wasn't there. Made me thing of one of the novels (Memory Prime maybe?) where it talks about how Kirk practices dropping phasers at a specific distance so he can do a quick shoulder roll and grab it. Love it!

I agree.

I'm not particularly keen on the colorful barrels, either. It doesn't seem tactically wise to put a glowing light on the front of your gun. I hope they never have to sneak around in the dark with one of those things.

I dug the new phaser and also thought red was kill and blue was stun. I understand that and am on side, but wonder why they made the choice to get rid of vapourisation. *shrug*

They may NOT have gotten rid of vaporization, we simply don't know yet. Maybe the lowest kill setting(s) saves power for more shots.

In TNG for example, level 6 burned people to a crisp and always killed, but did not vaporize. Why use extra power (and reduce "ammo" capacity) if not needed?

If this was real, and not sci-fi, Kirk and company would carry a mouse phaser backup, I mean type -1 palm phaser.

Anyone going into a dangerous situation (police, etc) carries a backup weapon.

But of course for the movies they make it dramatic by having the weapon kicked out of someones hand...

I think it's retarded. You don't change the muzzle of a rifle or pistol when you fire rubber bullets. Why would you have to change the muzzle of a weapon made with hundreds of years of advancement in technology? It's a retarded idea. It's an energy weapon. Change the modulation and amplitude, and you get a different effect. The end.
