A trailer for the movie version of 'The Road' has been released.

Has anyone else here read the novel? I thought it was really dark and disturbing, but I ended up reading the whole book in one day because I just had to know what happened to the man and boy.

I think I was actually a bit depressed after reading the book.

That said, I am looking forward to the movie.

Two friends of mine did some of the visual effects work on the film, so I am excited for it to come out, since it's been delayed so many times. I have never read the book, but I want to before I see it.

I love CM's work anyway, but thought The Road to be an absolute classic. Probably won of the most horrifying stories I have ever read. I cried during the final pages. Can't wait for this movie.

One of the most depressing books ever. Not your typical Mad Max style post-apocalyptic story. I'm not sure how they are going to make the movie in such a way that you don't want to just slit your wrists after you watch it.

I don't know that I want to see this. I'm just not into totally depressing. But it looks intense.

The trailer has me interested, but for those of you who've read the book, is this going to "Children of Men" level depressing?

If it's true to the book it will make Children of Men look like Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home.

Exactly. Look up the book on Amazon and the blurbs there should give you a pretty good idea of just how bleak the world of the novel is.

Al Gore called it the novel that could save the world because it is an enviornmental crusaders version of preaching some serious fire and brimstone.

Hmm. This looks a bit more action-packed than I remember from reading the book, which was very simplistic, however there were moments derived almost literally from the book in that trailer, so I'm decently excited. The wife seems to have a much larger role, probably due to the fact that it is Charlize Theron playing her.

I've heard good things about the book, although I've yet to read it. Michael K. Williams (Omar Little on The Wire) has at least a large enough role to make it into one shot of the trailer. I'll be there, reviews pending.

is this movie about cannibals?

Like Star Wars is about Jawas. They make an appearance.

Having read the book, it was great, but I can't imagine reading it twice. Could not go see this movie, knowing ahead of time what it's about. But it's probably excellent.

This is a story about trying to find meaning and hope in life when there is no longer any reason to the world. I do not know how the movie will portray the book but there are no "cheap thrills" to be offered in the novel. I dont want to use the term literary fiction per se but it is a much more poetic, nuanced and multilayered artistic endeavor than most genre fiction. The Road won the Pulitzer for fiction in 2007. It is a far cry from Texas Chain Saw Massacre or The Hills Have Eyes.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I am going to take the plunge and pick up a used copy to read, based on the strength of No Country for Old Men.

I found No Country to actually be a weaker novel. His earlier trilogy that begins with All the Pretty Horses is a fantastic read, but I'm getting off topic.

That's what has me worried. The book wasn't at all about big action setpieces - quite the opposite, it was a series of little, quiet moments. The trailer made it looks like this exciting, action-packed film.

And considering...

the wife really only shows up in a dream/flashback, for maybe two/three pages

Having Theron be a "headliner" in this is either very misleading or a large deviation, and I agrue, detraction as a faithful adaptation of the book.
