'The Road' trailer

Hmm. This looks a bit more action-packed than I remember from reading the book, which was very simplistic, however there were moments derived almost literally from the book in that trailer, so I'm decently excited. The wife seems to have a much larger role, probably due to the fact that it is Charlize Theron playing her.

That's what has me worried. The book wasn't at all about big action setpieces - quite the opposite, it was a series of little, quiet moments. The trailer made it looks like this exciting, action-packed film.

And considering...

the wife really only shows up in a dream/flashback, for maybe two/three pages

Having Theron be a "headliner" in this is either very misleading or a large deviation, and I agrue, detraction as a faithful adaptation of the book.

She is just getting billing because of her name I think. The mother could legitimately make an appearance in two or three flashback scenes without detracting too much from the story, including a potentially "best actress in a supporting role" scene.

One of the greatest, most heartbreaking novels I've ever read.

I can't wait for the film.

An advance review called it brilliant:

... and noted that the crap at the beginning of the film about HOW the world ends is NOT in the actual film, thank god.

that's good, because the film should NOT tell us exactly how the world ended.

Mortensen and the kid look like spot on casting decisions.

Theron obviously has a beefed up role. That may or may not work. Part of the point of The Road is that it's about a father and a son. Not three people. But if she's only there in flashbacks or for a bit of the film, I guess it's fine.

Some of the greatest parts of the book appear in the trailer and look to be spot-on, as well. The boy tasting soda for the first time, the beach with the ghost ship in the distance, the house scene (those who've read the know what I'm talking about)...

Yeah, I enjoyed seeing those moments in the trailer. If played correctly, they could all be very chilling and effective. Reading it is one thing, but actually seeing it unspool on a big screen, that's a whole other layer of bone-chillingly effectiveness right there.
