'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XI

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I am a man.
I liked seeing Bra & Panty Uhura.
I liked seeing bikini Orion Girl.

I didn't see Uhura as a victim, I didn't see her as a sex object (ok, well not only), I didn't see her as helpless, not one time. Instead, I saw an intelligent, stubborn, ambitious woman who was free to choose her own path without being pressed down by a patriarchal society. That's the Nyota Uhura I saw.

J.

Yeah, I was going to... *looks at avatar*

DOGGY!

...I'm sorry, what was I saying?

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Who is with me on night raids across the line?

Silence! Women must be protected from our evil maleness at all costs! All male initiated sex is rape, you know!!!:eek::eek:

I think the ladies who haven't seen a man in days would be most happy to initiate the mating ritual. I'll bring the cigars. :D

Yes! I'm glad you get it!
I wondered if anyone would tie my title in with the avatar and location. :D

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

My mother was part of the TOS's target audience for Uhura, and let me say this. It was the FIRST TIME EVER (outside of Juliet which I think premiered after) that a black woman was seen on television NOT being a maid, NOT caring for other people's children, NOT struggling w/o an education.

These dang feminists JUST DONT GET IT. With TOS Uhura even being considered to be competent (even as a space phone operator), was amazing to so many people who were very used to being ignored. Also, this part is huge:

TOS Uhura was FACTUALLY ATTRACTIVE. First time ever for women of color in a main stream audience! This hit home for so many people. She was also the lone female breaking up the sausage fest, she had to be educated enough to be in space, she was not delicate / weak/ or stupid, and yes she was there was a looker too.

Girls big and small all shapes and sizes got to see that yes, you can be pretty, smart, competent, independent, and in space all at once. So what she was a minor character, that doesn't mean that she WASN'T on the bridge.

I don't even want to get into what Nicholle went through behind the scenes.

But this was so important to so many people, like Dr. Mae Jemison. I dare someone to name the episode she got to appear in cause Star Trek's Uhura was her inspiration. BTW if you read her bio, it should sound familiar. Talk about the ultimate Trekkie, lol recite made up languages all you want but most don't actually get out into space.

Now that IUhura is bigger and better, why are this women trying to take away from that. Leave her alone. She's getting to do the thing Gene wanted her to do in the first place. That's right, JJ took a page out of his notes, literally.

Ugg, this is why militant feminist rarely include minorities. Where were these women when Nicholes was actually on the gd show to begin with, funny they show up now when her character is actually more interactive.

And yes, I loved seeing someone who looked like me being pretty, smart, wanted, and recieved in ITRECK. Call me shallow but w/e, it doesn't happen in the movies all that much. It's ironic that she was the one who had a sassy oversexed BF instead being one.

Also, it took 43 FN YEARS for ANYONE to say her FAN MADE UP NAME, where's the outrage on that!!!!

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

What the author of the article in the OP basically wants is nothing but Mary Sue characters, females who are the best at everything

Uhura needs to be the perfect woman because she's the only significant female character in the film, such that any qualities she possesses are seen to reflect upon women in general. The male characters don't have this problem, they can be as eccentric and flawed as they like because there are other male characters around them to provide a broader view of masculinity. Flaws in gay and lesbian characters create so much controversy because there're so few such characters around that each is seen, somewhat ironically, as much a representative of their sexuality as they are individual characters with personalities of their own.

This is one of the reasons why I would've liked to have seen Chekov replaced with a female character. That and Russian chicks are hot.

Nothing about the portrayal of Uhura in this movie needed to be changed.

Ahem.
<----Furry. :D

I get the title, but your location isn't ringing any in-joke bells.

Oh, OT, I'm a guy and titties and curves make me feel all mushy and vulnerable inside, and it feels good. And I not only can respect a woman in spite of it, I can also respect women because of it. :adore:

Sarcasm?

I think women are beyond that now. Lets see real woman with flaws and qualities (and sexuality for the Hollywood executives ;)).

The ship main characters could be a little more diverse. Having a Russian woman replacing Chekov would have been a good idea. If you accept making fun of her because of her accent. ;)

I agree. I'm explaining why some folks object that she's in a relationship, that she's on the sidelines in the fight, etc. If there was a female character in the film who wasn't tied to a man then that objection would disappear. Folks expect Uhura to portray every aspect of womanhood because she's the only woman around to portray it. The gender balance in the film is undeniably skewed, and that's the root of the author's concerns. Kirk can get away with being a womaniser because he's surrounded by other men who aren't.

Well, the location's just supposed to help the title. It's not connected to the avatar as much as the title itself. :D

Evil! EEEEVIL!!!!

Does that mean you'll be bringing the beer?

Beer is also evil as it makes women appear more attractive and thus increases how demeaned they can be.

Then I hope the ladies and I demean each other until the beer and cigars are gone.

I agree, but realistically, they had to include Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, McCoy and Chekov. They could have had Janice Rand or Christine Chapel as well, I suppose, but it rapidly makes for a bloated movie.

It's okay, because I know that if she had been in a fight she could have taken care of herself, and not in some ridiculous 90's/2000's Xena/Kira/Buffy/Echo way, but in a smart way that doesn't involve her beating up a guy twice her size.

Then I hope the ladies and I demean each other until the beer and cigars are gone.

You're male, you're not capable of being demeaned. Males are rutting beasts, looking for females to rape and animals to kill and eat.

Oh, so it's that kind of party. Well, I'll just bring the leather chaps!

Actually, I think the "Wessels" bit would have been even better if the audience slowly realized that "Hey that girl is Chekov!"

Damn you canon.

Has this been posted yet:

http://firefox.org/news/articles/2794/1/Opinion-Women-in-the-New-Star-Trek-Movie/Page1.html

A different feminist point of view, and much more of the way I saw Uhura in the movie than the opinion at the start of this thread.

"She's focused, she doesn't muck about, and she's hella smart and awesome at her job. This to me is a good thing. But just because she has a love interest, this does not in my eyes reduce her to the role of nothing but a love interest."

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

They could've always made Kirk himself a woman, just like they did with Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica. Though I'd bet some fans would get even more pissed off over that then they are right now. :D

Oh my. I think if that were to have happened, TrekBBS would have become sentient, awoken, and then promptly killed itself to escape the bitching.
