Give me some reasons to like Nero.

Nero is simple and effective that's why I like him

There were bits of the film that annoyed me but the character of Nero would not be a complaint

He's mourning the death of his wife and wants revenge. No matter how much he goes back in time or tries to fix the timeline he won't be able to do it, he's a worker grunt not a quantum physicist. He is stuck in the past and will never see his wife again. He's not logical like Spock or uber-intelligent he's just passionate

and Romulans make great bad guys, plus Bana does a great job

No, not the Schwarzenegger version, the Animated Series version.

His usually calm demeanour, the loss of his wife.. oh, and the baldness.

And yet, he can calculate where and when Spock will emerge from the red matter singularity and manipulate said red matter, which the Vulcans specifically kept from the Romulans. Quite the interesting skills for 'just a miner'...

Exactly. Villains don't usually have logical motives. This gets into the whole issue of evil--some say it doesn't exist and every behavior has some logical--chemical explanation--or it's in the genes. He was bent on Revenge and it was not logical----remember when Pike tried to reason with him? Didn't work.

As for Bana's performance--very good.
Nero was just nasty and bent on revenge. There's no need to understand him.

Not necessarily. There was no real villain in THE VOYAGE HOME.

Wasn't the villain of TVH the whaling industry?

I suppose, but that's sort of abstract--especially since the unnamed whalers only appeared for a couple of minutes near the end.
