Scotty's Accent

Butters

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Have seen a couple of remarks on the new Scotty's accent and thought I should make a point.

I'm no Scot, but I live close enough to get their money in my change, and if you've ever caught a Glasgow bound train, you'll know a terrible Scotch accent.

Pegg might not sound like Doohan, but wheres the sense in continuing an error? Scotty now sounds like a Scot, can we start using that as a credit to film and not a criticism? Please.

When I've seen the original nondubbed version I thought Pegg was the younger but Scotty =) In dubbed - there's of course no accent!

Well, the dubbed, not american, but russian, the voice is different =)
Pegg pulled it quite well.

I don't understand the need for people to view dubbed versions. But then again, I grew up with English being my second language, so I might be biased.

As for Scotty's accent: I don't think there was any wrong with it in the movie. It was certainly better then Doohan's accent, which was a bit over the top if you ask me.

Pegg gave us a different sounding accent to that Doohan, as in, from a different region of Scotland.

I have a Glasweigna in my family, its a thick accent and spoken really fast. Neither Pegg or Doohan did a glasgow accent, more of a, shall we say, parody-ish accent.

However i did feel, even though that Pegg is a great actor/performer, that he sleep walked through some of this movie, it was kinda disapointing.

Speaking as a native Scot, his accent wanders a bit more than Doohan's (which at least stayed consisten throughout the series before turning Irish in the movies) but is more Scottish, and he plays it with a more Scottish attitude IMO - "Get tae f-" is *exactly* how I'd have reacted at the same moment, and I don't believe for a second that that line was in O&K's script...

Didn't Pegg's wife help him with the accent when he was filming? AFAIK, she *is* Scottish.
Yes, she did. But as a non-Scot, I suppose he can't get those tiny nuances exactly right.

But I liked his take on the accent nonetheless.

:D

Anyone hear Craig Ferguson's album? He does a bit about how Scotty's accent in TOS sounded like "a Pakistani with a stroke". :p

Come to think of it, Craig Ferguson would have made a great Scotty himself... :vulcan:

I think trying to find anyone sounding like Scotty's accent is impossible since Doohan basically ad-libbed the accent.

I beg to differ. As a Scot myself he did rather well. He was hamming it up but he didn't make any long vowel errors, which almost all English and North Americans do (for instance Mike Myers did a very good job in Shrek but made long vowel errors throughout because it's so difficult to get right unless you're a native Scot). Without the Scotty boundless enthusiasm, he would have passed as generic Scottish and you can't really get better than that.

I should add that Doohan's accent was as funny to us as Billy Connolly in full rant mode. I recall it was an endless source of hilarity even as a small child.

But no-one in Scotland talks like Simon Pegg's mash-up of Scottish accents.

Doohan had gone to full Irish by the time of the Voyage Home.

I enjoyed Simon Pegg as Scotty, but he maintained the tradition Mr Scott's bad Scottish accent.

All, obviously, IMO.
