Scotty's Accent

Speaking as a native Scot, his accent wanders a bit more than Doohan's (which at least stayed consisten throughout the series before turning Irish in the movies) but is more Scottish, and he plays it with a more Scottish attitude IMO - "Get tae f-" is *exactly* how I'd have reacted at the same moment, and I don't believe for a second that that line was in O&K's script...

But no-one in Scotland talks like Simon Pegg's mash-up of Scottish accents.

On both - I loved the accent and it was far more authentic than some Scots manage on TV or film.

Even I have to ham my accent up to get a native crowd to believe I'm anything but American as I'm to 'middle class' to be taken seriously, according to feedback.

The 'Get tae' line was far more genuine than anything I've tried and he does sound like the Scots I know that have lived one place then moved to Glasgow.

Except for the occasional word that I didn't quite catch because he was speaking so quickly, I didn't have much of a problem with his accent. I can see why it might bother some more though if they were more familiar with those particular regional dialects. I get annoyed when I hear actors butchering Southern accents (USA).

The only actor I had a huge problem with speech/accent wise was with Chekov. But that's another topic...

Oh absolutely. Ewan McGregor step forward. Also that bloke in Primeval. The few episodes I watched he sounded so fake I refused to believe he was Scottish.

My girlfriend lived in Scotland for a year and instantly um...pegged it as a Glaswegian accent (and liked that Scotty come from there), especially with the nice little touch of "youse guys" which was apparently a Scottish phrase long before it was a New York phrase.

I did hear quite a bit of Pegg's own English accent though, but to this American anglophile, it sounded a lot more authentic than Doohan's lovably cartoony accent.

Oh, and the thing that bugged me about Mike Myers' Shrek accent was definitely a vowel thing. He pronounced "privacy" with a long I as in America, not a short I as in the UK (as we all know Picard and O'Brien say it that way). But he's playing an ogre in a magical land with a hodge-podge of accents anyway.

Funny thing: people told me more than once that I sound vaguely scottish when I speak English. It must be something from my city's accent sneaking into my English speech, like a peculiar "sshh" sound and vowel length...

I'm Welsh but there's a few Scots in my neighbourhood plus a lot on TV & Pegg definitley sounds pretty good but at points he does drift back into his English accent.

Scotland is part of Britain, so for Montgomery Scott to sound British is a good thing.

I think Pegg's accent was reasonable, in that it would get a few strange looks in Scotland but it would just about pass. However, his style and tone of speaking was very Scottish. I loved his "get tae f..." which I am sure he put in himself.

Non-Scots have to remember that like other nations there are loads of Scottish accents so to a Scot it wouldn't be quite right but I think to others it would be a fair mash-up as others have said.

One more thing on accents - most notice the Scottish and Russian accents and comment on it as if it's strange - but have you never thought that the REALLY weird thing in Star Trek is that most have American accents even though the Star Fleet recruits from the whole planet and beyond?

Now that should be explained in canon somehow!
