The 82nd Academy Awards & STAR TREK

We've all seen the movie now, so what are the possibilities for Trek at the Oscars? This is not to say a film's worth is judged on the awards won, but it is fun to speculate.

Trek has past winners on board, such as Michael Giacchino and Ben Burtt. Could they bring home another for Star Trek?

Art Direction for Scott Chambliss possibly?

I thought the CGI was beautiful, but with Transformers 2 and Avatar this year, I have my doubts with that one.

So what awards do you think Trek could beam back?

None. Maybe some technical awards, but nothing beyond that.

The movie was enjoyable, but I highly doubt it'll bring in any hardware.

It will likely be nominated for FX, but probably still lose to Transformers. Nothing really stood out in terms of makeup.

Visual effects are less likely with some of the aforementioned films on the way. But sound editing is already a lock for a nomination, mark my words.

Oh, and Michael Giacchino never won an Oscar.

Why would Star Trek be selected to the Oscars? There's no use.
ST's own reward lies in the outstanding numbers for its opening weekend.

I think they have a fair shot for effects, but I wouldn't expect a nod for the screenplay.

Oh, and Michael Giacchino never won an Oscar.

Star Trek composer Michael Giacchino is again being recognized for his talents, this time by the World Soundtrack Academy which has just announced their nominees for for their annual Soundtrack Awards. Giacchino has been nominated for Composer of the Year, for his work on Star Trek and other films

Giacchinno’s nomination for Film Composer of the Year recognizes his work for Star Trek as well as Up and Land of the Lost.

Unfortunately none of Giacchino’s scores picked up nominations for Best Original Score of the Year. A full list of nominations can be found at worldsoundtrackawards.com. The winners will be announced at the Ghent International Film Festival on October 17th.

A different award group but the real possibility is now open.

If this movie wins anything but a technical award, something is VERY wrong with this world.

Giacchino doesn't deserve an Oscar for his Star Trek score. If he wins one, then Goldsmith, Horner and Eidelmann should get one retroactively and guys like Danny Elfman, Michael Kamen and Alan Silvestri should get one for each of their movies.

I'd be very surprised if it didn't get nominated for 2 maybe 3 awards. Visual effects being the most obvious, but it won't win anything I don't think.

Yeah, Giacchino deserves an Oscar for some of his Pixar scores, particularly for The Incredibles, but not for Trek. It was good, but not great.

FX will probably end up going to either Transformers or Avatar, but likely the latter if it is as innovative as the buzz seems to make it.

I doubt TF will win it. Yeah the film was crammed FULL of effects, but there wasn't anything really new or groundbreaking there-- and in fact many have commented that the quality actually went down from the first movie.

Unfortunately Trek doesn't do anything particularly new either.

Yeah, that was my opinion three months ago. Now I think Avatar will win. Although I thought the FX in TF2 were awe-inspiring, particularly the opening battle and the one in the forest. The story went down in quality epically, but the FX were much better.
