I love how people are freaking out about Delta Vega when...

TK421

Commodore
Commodore
They BLEW UP Vulcan and kept it that way.

Half the episodes from TOS now can't happen, because Vulcan doesn't exist. Kirk is Captain earlier, so he probably has the Talos event, not Pike.

Kirk never meets Gary Mitchell so that friendship and episode doesn't occur.

The dominoes fall on and on into the movies.

Amok Times, is very different and not on Vulcan. Just in Uhura's bedroom.

Kirk and crew can't take refuge on Vulcan at the beginning of Star Trek IV, so they probably can't make it back ib time to save Earth from the Whale Whisperer.

In Voyager, Tuvok probably is never born.

It goes on and on.

And yet I still loved the movie. :D

Young minds, fresh ideas, be tolerant. :)

We still have the original universe, imo. This is a new multiverse to explore. Frankly, I could do with six really good movies, from the bones of the classic 90 or so hours of 23rd century Trek.

I loved it because of that, honestly. That was very, very brave of them to do that. Reset is a cop out and I hate it.

Some of the most beloved episodes and stories in Star Trek take place in a mirror universe, so we know and accept that alternate realities exist. It is not a problem.

I wouldn't call it brave when they clearly had no particular respect for the franchise. It was just lazy IMO. Somebody envisioned a really cool effects shot and that planet needed a name. Vulcan. Done.

actually if it happened the cage has already happened.
this is about what a two to four years before where man has gone before.
kirk may have met mitchell still.
tpring might have escaped vulcan ;)

:p

as for the destruction of vulcan.

well it certainly lets us know we no longer assume just because a character was save in classic trek time line they will be save now.

but i do hope in the next film there is at least some mention of the
implications of what the destruction of vulcan has caused.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree, I think. Reset has always been what I hated the most in any franchise, especially Trek; take the Prophets wiping out the Dominion fleet- that was lazy writing. The Dominion was a million times better and would have kicked the Feds where it hurts the most....but because that cannot happen, because the good guys must win against the baddies....they applied Deus ex Machina.

Respect for the franchise is honouring the characters and details, not not creating an alternative reality. I don't see how that's disrespectful or lazy, like, at all.

Doing something like that, changes of that magnitude take some courage and they were taking a mighty risk. I think it's cool.

Quoted for Truth. This is exactly why this universe will be good - it's not the usual prequel universe where we know what will happen. Anything can happen here.

Anybody can die. It's great.

I have to disagree. That was a bold choice, because it turns the Vulcans into refugees and actually does weaken the Federation substantially. In some ways it almost makes the Vulcans go though what the outcasts who formed Romulus must.

It opens up an entirely different arc for the Romulans, as Classic Spock will warn them 100 years before giving them ample time to evacuate a work things out. And that will cause Young Spock in this universe not to go thru the black hole in the multiverse leading to another multiverse we can plan for 40 years from now, we can really throw holograms from our iPhone's holoemmiter. Damn 2 megapixel holograms.

People would be complaining that the writers never took chances if Vulcan had been saved, too.

I hate the Vulcan is gone, but I understand this isn't the same Star Trek that I watched growing up. I have both versions now.

If they had saved Vulcan in this film, I'd be first in line to file a complaint, believe me. If they do so in future films and it makes sense, well, whatever. But it was great that they didn't now.

^ True, old Spock is all around and there are always possibilities, but it seems like it would give the writers a lot more space to explore the 23rd century with such a major timeline altering event.

Will the Intrepid die during its encounter the Space Amoeba now? I doubt it would be crewed solely by Vulcans anymore.

Could it divide several times and be the big menace in movie #5 directed by Chris Pine, after Brett Ratner rests control of the franchise? Who knows?

The events in all the episodes of TOS, TNG, DSP, VOY and ENT as well as all the other movies still happened. This movie is still linked to regular continuity because of Spock Prime. All the variations, twists and differences that are displayed in the film are a direct result of Nero's alterations to the timeline.

If you look at it from the point of view of Spock Prime, this is all still the same continuity as all other Trek; and this movie takes place both long before and after Nemesis. This movie serves as both a sequel and remake of the original.

Get it? :)
