Did anyone else like the look of the red coat over grey uniform Picard wore in season 5, up to the first few season 7 episodes? He seemed to go back to red uniform only early in season 7.

I thought the grey was a lot more neutral and professional looking that the bright red.

I loved it. I think he should have stuck with it. I think in a way it was like TNG's version of Captain Kirk's green tunic - an outfit only the Captain was ever seen wearing (until that Enterprise mirror episode). I don't like the season 3-7 uniforms much because they look so awkward the way they're too short at the bottom, causing Picard and Riker to constantly have to pull them down uncomfortably.

I actually bought an action figure of Picard in his Captain's jacket just because I like the outfit so much. I'm really picky about face sculpts. Usually I wouldn't buy a figure if I don't think the face strongly resembles the actor it's based on. In this case I thought it didn't resemble Patrick Stewart, but like a sucker I bought it anyway just because I thought the uniform was so cool. Same with the First Contact vest Picard. Unfortunately in that case DS9 took away some of the novelty of that look by giving Sisko the same uniform, but I'm glad the Captain's jacket was kept more unique.

Here's a few of his uniforms. I wasn't a fan of the early-seasons uniform, I definitely preferred the more professional look of the later styles.

His jacket-ish uniform look in the later seasons was quite nice, and if they had just made it look less like something he wore casually lie in that last shot it may have looked like a formal uniform or something.

I've never been a big fan of the design choices of most of the uniforms. yes I know it's the future but pockets are handy...

That's one of the things I liked about Enterprise, the uniforms actually looked like something people would work in...

They changed Picard's jacket to the one above. This is how it was in Darmok.

I don't mind either variation, but I really didn't care for the blue shirt underneath, or the collar, and in some shots (I think in Darmok, in particular,) he has a real blouson effect happening with his trousers, which I really don't care for. My favourite Picard look is the waistcoat in First Contact. He looked hot in that.

I heard this blue shirt thing before - It was actually grey wasn't it?

Grey, blue, whatever it was, I didn't care for it. :)

Yeah they changed the leather to a suede after "Darmok." Supposedly, iirc, pig leather was used and it stank.

    Something in-between, I think. A blue-gray.

I remember reading something at the time about Marina making comments about Picard's jacket. Something along the lines of it being the future, and they're all enlightened, but he's walking around with a dead animal on his back. I know she is, or was, into animal rights, so that might have influenced her comment.

What does enlightenment have to do with dead animals? We can replicate dead animals for food but not for clothing?

^ Dunno. Better ask Marina when you see her.

 Yea, I wasn't suggesting that you defend her stance as your own, it was more an attempt to stimulate a small discussion regarding the future of animal rights, smartass.

Fair enough. Misread your post. Being called a smartass stings though. :(

Now now, let's play nice, people. :) How many episodes did he wear that leather variation of the jacket in? I would guess fewer than the suede one, and yet for some reason the figure's look seems to be based on the leather one.

I think the leather one is a better fit. I think the suede one seems to hang poorly and looks sloppy in my opinion. I don't like the ridges on the leather shoulders, though. I think they are too wide for my tastes.

I'm not sure. Possibly only Darmok. I remember at the time not realising that it had changed until someone pointed it out to me.

    I always liked the jacket.

Trivia: Patrick Stewart requested that the jacket and alternate uniform be made for him at the beginning of Season Five. He wanted something that made him stand out from the others like Captain Kirk's green wraparound in TOS.
