Picard Season 5 - Season 7 coat / grey uniform

I always liked the jacket.

Trivia: Patrick Stewart requested that the jacket and alternate uniform be made for him at the beginning of Season Five. He wanted something that made him stand out from the others like Captain Kirk's green wraparound in TOS.

Why did it disapear early in season 7?
I don't actually know that answer. I seem to recall Stewart also saying that it was made of an itchy material.

It was ugly and uncomfortable.

I never liked the jacket or the shirt beneath it that looked too much like one of Wesley's acting ensign tunics. I favor the idea of giving the Captain an alternate uniform or two, but none of these fit the bill for me.

I liked that alternate look, and much prefer the jacket he wore in Darmok. I would've preferred the jacket be all black, though, or have the colors reversed: Grey instead of red for the jacket, and red instead of gray for the tunic underneath. And it also would've been nice if the jacket closed. I wonder if Patrick Stewart left the series, as he almost did at the end of season three, whether Jonathan Frakes as Captain Riker would have had the same alternate uniform. Also, although we only saw Picard wear the outfit, I wonder if other officers wore it at times, not just starfleet captains. -- RR

Seeing how people liked the TOS Movie uniforms for having a more official "Jacketed" look to them, do you think they could have taken the Alternate Picard outfit and made it more similar to a "official jacketed" look for Picard as well? I mean a TNG take on the TOS Red uniform look.

Shrugs, doesn't matter what I like, it's just going to change again anyway. Uniforms should look smart and be comfortable. As long as it's not those prissy white ones from The first ST movie

When he first started wearing it I thought it was kind of strange, I didn't really care for it; now I do. I really like it now, looking back on it; It kind of set him apart, made him stand out as the strong Captain.

They should have made him wear the green wraparound if he wanted to be whiney. :) The FIRST version with the scrambled eggs on the shoulders.

I feel the whole uniform thing got a bit crazy. I mean, in Generations, the whole crew is sporting both Standard TNG style, & early DS9 style. Most of the main cast were wearing either, at any given time. I suppose you could say they were going through a rather sloppy transformation, from one to the other, but some of them never change & some go back & forth, & dammit all if the reds don't match, in real light

It isn't uniform, if the form isn't universal. Thankfully, they got it sorted out, by the time of 1st Contact, where fleet wide uniformity was regained, with the Black & Grays, (excepting Voyager, who were out of the fashion loop) Picard's vest being the one exception. I'm all for the Captain's prerogative rule, as I was when he invoked it, during the series.

Though the leather lapels were better fitted, I think the cloth ones were more fitting. I rather like the idea of the jacket simulating everyone else's bodysuits, (Or top & bottom suits) In order for that to happen, it should have been made to close somehow. Yes, we have no buttons & zippers in the 24th, but at least hook the dude up with some Velcro. Had they done so, it could have been adopted by the entire bridge staff.

I wasn't fond of the Black & Grays, at first. I thought them a bit drab, but they do lend themselves better to having pockets, & I was glad to have uniformity back. So, they eventually grew on me. Not literally... I don't own one :p

Too Much Fun, as we know from the wonderful digital representations of the classic trek series, all of Kirk's uniform variations were green. As for the gray uniform worn by Picard, I thought it needed a little work--it needed to be a little loose and more distinguished but eh.

The jacket and grey uniform really did suit Picard, IMO. I think it's the best of the Captain's special uniform variants by far.
