The funny thing is, most of the 'hard' comics are now not being sold by comic book stores. I have found one that sells the Max Titles but usually stores won't carry those. They don't carry a ton of Vertigo titles or other comics.
Japan is also a totally different type of society than the United States and is a totally different culture. It's like comparing apples with oranges.
But the stuff they throw in some of the manga is very - well it's not good for kids around 10-12 to be reading and even younger.
Which indeed shows that the social issues are coming from elsewhere. If reading violent manga caused people to go out and commit crimes, it is something that would be happening on both sides of the ocean
I just don't see it. My entire life no one went around hiding violent movies and the like from me and I turned out fine. If anything, I'd say people are using TV and movies as a scape goat for the real issue- shitty parenting.

Not shitty parenting, but some parents simply don't know or can't keep up with their kids. Some of these manga books should be in the adult section of the store.

Well not here, in Minnesota anyway. But then some convenience stores in LA and New York have their employees in a bullet proofed glass structure with metal shutters that looks like it could withstand assault from automatic weapons and explosives so I wouldn't doubt it.
I think it's up to the company that sells it to do the plastic wrapping and usually if it's needed it's done. In my manga travels, I haven't encountered many plastic wrapped volumes or read many series that needed it. I only read two series that are regularly plastic wrapped, Black Lagoon and Suzuka. For the former it's because of the frequent violence or foul language and for the later it's because the main character lives in a college dorm/bath house and there's occasional (extremely well drawn) nudity. I've also found some individual volumes wrapped for extreme content like the final volume of Ai Yori Aoshi which was done for good reason considering

Aoi and Kouru finally resolve their family issues preventing their mariage and Aoi asks him to take her, resulting in an unexpected by definitely welcome sex scene.

Yes -- plastic wrap...a solution to keeping kids out of books.
I work in a retail store part-time for the same company I do full-time security work for (Revlon, in Edison NJ). We have a large base of customers from, to put it gently, a culture that seems to not quite get the rules and traditions of American retail. Among the problems we have had is these customers entering the stockroom. But a clearly-marked sign plus some vigilance has cut that down to almost nothing. Some still do, but that is inevitable. All but the most insane countermeasures can only keep a targeted group away from something for so long. In short, the plastic wrap is a solution, not a perfect one, but one that I'll bet moves a lot of curious kids onto something else.
OTOH, if Elfen Lied ever makes it here, it will prolly be in a steel lock-box.

Yes, plastic wrap works quite well to keep children out of a lot of things.......you have to use quite a large quantity to wrap a person though.
