Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Carrying on from earlier...

Fast forward to 6? Years later I think it is and we get the sequence of Young Kirk driving the classic car off the cliff. He passes his older brother who looks dumbfounded as the hover police bike chases him. This scene really only serves to show Kirk is an off the rails kid.

Now the movie takes us 20? Years later to the early twenties Kirk driving up to a bar. Then we get the bar fight weve seen a million times in the trailers. If there was one thing i'd have changed in this film it would be SOME kirk fu, but unfortunately Chris Pine had the intention of winning the fight and not looking "cool" :p

Captain Pike gives him the pep talk and mentions a shuttle leaving for the Acadamy in the morning. Kirk thinks about it and the next time we see him he's boarding the shuttle when were introduced to Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy. Yes the origin of his Bones nickname is revealed. Wont say what. Got to leave something to the imagination :p

Another 3 years later is where the story really begins. Kirk and McCoy are coming out of the Acadamy building where Kirk mentions he is gong to retake the Kobayashi Maru test for a 3rd time. McCoy mentions how crazy the idea is as its a test your supposed to fail. Kirk doesnt believe in losing :p

The test is over pretty quickly, but we do get a glimpse at some updated D-7 "Warbirds" and Kirk cheating.

Kirk is called out at an assembly of what looks like the entire acadamy to answer for his "cheating" and Spock comes out to explain why it is a no win scenario, you have to experience fear, "fear in the face of certain death. You of all people should know that." which starts the feud between Kirk and Spock. Before the Academy can reprimand Kirk, they get a distress call from Vulcan. Most of the Federation fleet is off in some other sector or other (cant remember the name :S) and so what ships are left at Earth are dispatched. Kirk is left behind but McCoy infects him with some virus and takes him on as a patient. Although, yes, his hands do swell up and he slurs his speach, it isnt anywhere NEAR the same level of "ugh" slapstick that Jar Jar Binks gave to the world. Same with Scottys short alien companion (who looks ALOT like a short Kolaran from Nemesis) who is just a thorn in Scotty's side.

Uhura mentioned to Kirk earlier in the film that she picked up a message from a Klingon outpost and Captain Pike gives Chekov the order to tell the ship whats happening. Kirk hears the mention of a "lightning storm in space" and remembers reading about his fathers doomed mission. He rushes to Uhura to see if the Klingon transmission mentioned anything about Romulans (it does) and so they all rush to the bridge to convince Pike to stop as its a trap (they do).

Kirk convinces Pike its a trap but they still have to check out the disturbance, so they get there (Later than the rest of the fleet. Cant quite remember if they stopped of if it was because Sulu left the "Parking Brake" on at Earth (The "external intertial dampeners").

So they get there, the fleet is destroyed and they see the massive Romulan ship drilling into the surface of Vulcan. The drill is distrupting the transporters so they cant beam down and after brief skirmish with Nero he orders a ceasefire and invites Pike to the Narada. Pike complies knowing it is a trap and seeing as the transporters have been disabled, they have no choice but to skydive down. This is where we meet the peppy Chief Engineer Olsen who as you all know by now is wearing a Red shirt. Ya. So Sulu and Kirk land on the Platform to destroy it, but Olsen had the charges on him (and he's now atoms on the surface of vulcan) so they have to grab a romulan rifle and shoot at it as much as they can. They disable the drill which leads Nero to order it retracted, during which Kirk and Sulu fall of the drill and so they are falling without chutes. With the beam disabled they can transport them (with chekov having to do so seeing as he's good with the targeting scanners) back to the Enterprise just in the nick of time. At the Same time Spock beams down to Vulcan to save his family.

Meanwhile Pike is held Captive on the Narada and in a scene VERY reminiscent of the Ceti Eels from Wrath of Khan, Nero implants a bug in Pikes mouth to make him give the codes of Earths defense net.

Nero leaves Vulcan as it implodes and Spock leaves with whats left of his Family and fellow Vulcans. This is the other emotional moment of the movie, which is quite unique to this film as the Characters arent meant to show their emotions which makes the moment all the more tragic. Spocks personal log is very tragic as he states "I estimate there are fewer than 10,000 Vulcans left. I am now a member of an endangered species."

More to come! :p

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Did you go to the party afterwards? And if so was it fun?

Did the movie get a standing ovation in screen one?

I saw the movie in screen two and didn´t know that they screened in three and four as well. Cool. The interest in the movie was huge:)

I was in screen 4. Came out earlier and couldnt hang around as I had to get the last train home.

It got a round of applause at the end though.

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Spock estimates there are fewer than 10,000 Vulcans left! Goodness. As I've harped on in the spoilers thread, I hope the Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman thought through the ramifications of that on Trek beyond this movie. We'll see, I guess.

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

*turning green with envy*

Thanks for letting us know that the movie is good. Kind of figured it would be so. My only complaint is that the nacelles of the new Enterprise look kinda like some Italian design from the 1960's movies that came from that region. Otherwise, from what I have seen, it looks like it will rock. I am also looking forward to seeing the Kelvin. The snaps I have seen look pretty cool. I don't remember reading what class of starship it is though.

*chomping at the bit to see this movie*

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Whaat, you got to keep your phones! At the Belgian premiere they were confiscated at the door.

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

okay, I haven't read anything but good on you people... I'm glad you had a great time!

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Thanks Dac. This is the most comprehensive spoiler I've read on the movie thus far. More, please, more!

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

The opening scene of a Movie is very important. If the scene is good you have the audience by the balls for the rest of the film

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

So, after Spocks personal log, he heads to the Turbolift where Uhura gets in with him and puts it on hold. Its at this point the audience is shown that Spock and Uhura are in a relationship together. Uhura tries to get Spock to open up about losing his homeworld but he just shuts her out and tells her he needs the crew to be at their best.

I BELIEVE its around this point that Kirk makes a move for Captain but Spock shuts him out, they have a fight and Spock jettisons Kirk on Delta Vega (or the moon of Vulcan). I feel the need to mention the escape pod came OUT the neck of the ship from the place I thought was a docking port. Kinda weird place for a pod as its the thinnest part of the ship but oh well :p

Kirk blacks out and comes too on Delta Vega, he gets out the pod and his Tricorder tells him theres a Federation outpost 14km to the Northwest (even though Majel Roddenberry does voice the computer in the film, im sure there are several different voices too. Whether they were added after Majels passing or not, I dont know). Kirk heads out in a very Undiscovered Country Rutha Pente vista shot walking across the ice when he finds himself in a snowstorm being chased by a polar bear from hell. Just as the bear is about to get him, another giant Red Monster thing (which looks an AWFUL lot like a mini Cloverfield Monster, just red) eats the bear and then comes down on Kirk. Kirk slides down an ice cliff into a cave as the monster falls down the cliff and follows him, once in the cave the monster is led off by a man from the cave. Spock. Old Spock.

I have to mention here, if you remember Star Wars when we first saw Ben Kenobi shooing off the Sand people in A New Hope. This is that scene just with Nimoy Spock and Young Kirk. Spock fills in the details of whats happened with Nero via a Mind Meld Montage which fills in why Nero came after him and left him there (turns out he left him on Delta Vega because it had a fairly clear view of Vulcan so Spock could watch it be destroyed). After the MMM Kirk is dazed and confused by it all and asks what happens next. Spock asks if Kirk is the Captain of the Enterprise which he is not. This leads Spock to surmize that Nero has altered the timeline earlier than he previously thought (Just to make clear now, Nero appeared in front of the USS Kelvin on the Day Kirk was born. Spock appeared 20ish years later and was greeted by a Nero who had spent that time learning when and where the anomaly would drop Spock off so he could make him suffer.) and that he must tip Spocks emotional balance to get him to relieve himself of command. They both leave the cave and head to the outpost where we are greeted by a short alien called Keenser. He takes us to a sleeping Scotty. Now, everyone says Simon Pegg steals every scene he is in. I would have to agree with them, he is very much the comic relief but at the same time is a very smart man who does save the day (think Rodney McKay only less arrogant). I say this because a few reviews I have seen make Scotty out to be the barrell of laughs, and while he is, it isnt fair to ignore his acheivements in helping the good guys win. It is while here we get a nod to Enterprise (Scotty was sent here as punishment for losing Admiral Archers Beagle in a transporter accident) which I apprecieated. Spock gives Scotty his own formula for Transwarp beaming, after which Scotty exclaims "AHA! I'd 'ave neva thought of space being the thing thats moovin'" I should also point out that Scotty clearly states he could beam someone across the system if need be.

Scotty and Kirk beam back to the Enterprise which is now on its way to regroup with the rest of the Federation fleet. Kirk rematerializes safely in an Engineering room whereas Scotty beams into the water pipes. This is pretty much the most "childish" bit of the film, but in context it does work and they dont spend alot of time dwelling on it (Unlike every time Jar Jar binks used his tongue to get in trouble....*shudders*). Chekov mentions that there is an intruder alert and Spock orders a security detail to catch them. Its at this point Kirk meets "cupcake" again from the Trailers.

They are brought to the bridge in the clip that was released a while back. After which Kirk causes an emotional imbalance in Spock which causes him to lash out and almost Kill kirk. Kirk mentions the protocol that Spock told him earlier (something about Officers with an emotional investment in the mission at hand should not be allowed to command if their feelings cloud their judgement) and Spock relieves himself of command leaving kirk to take the big chair. He orders the Enterprise to Earth (which I forgot to mention Nero was heading too :s Sorry :p) and they come up with a plan to hide the Enterprise so that the Narada cant blast them out of the sky when they drop out of warp. Chekov comes up with the plan to warp behind Saturns moon Titan and beam aboard the Narada before they can get a chance to activate the drill. The ship comes out of Warp right into titans upper atmosphere (filled with dust in the movie, not sure if thats scientifically accurate or not) which leads to a Beautiful shot of the Enterprise rising out of the smoke with Saturn behind it.

At this point, Kirk and Spock head to the transporter room to beam to the Narada. Scotty mentions "if they had any sense when they designed that ship i should be putting you in their cargo bay, not a soul in sight." Of course, he ends up putting them right in the middle of the shuttle deck thingy which is filled with Romulans.

Nero then fires the drill at Earth. Preventing beamout.

This leads to a frantic (and I mean, FRANTIC) Phaser fight with Kirk and Spock shooting down Romulans left right and center. I should point out the phasers look much better in the film (and the twisty barrell thing when going from Stun to Kill is a nice touch) than the toy version does. At this point Spock and Kirk discover the Jellyfish (Spocks time ship) and Spock takes control of it to create a diversion for Kirk to rescue Captain Pike (who is still being held captive).

The Jellyfish shoots around the Narada's insides and then bursts through the hull and then shoots the drill thats attacking earth, destroying it. Its at this point Nero screams "FIRE EVERYTHING!" from the trailer. Before any of the torpedoes find theyre mark, the Jellyfish jumps to warp and the Narada continues after. Meanwhile Ayel corners Kirk and Nero comes and beats him up (The whole "Captain Kirk was a great man, but that was another life" bit). Nero then goes off to chase after Spock. Ayel toys with Kirk for a bit while the Narada catches up with Spock and the final battle begins.

The Jellyfish tries to escape the Narada but Nero launches another barrage of torpedoes at him with Spock on a collision course with the Narada. Theres a beat where it looks like Spock is gonna die, but out of nowhere the Enterprise comes in the most AWESOME last minute save ever and blows all of torpedoes out the sky and allows Spock time to pilot the Jellyfish into the Narada. Scotty beams Spock back to the Enterprise. The collision knocks Ayel off guard which allows Kirk to knock him off the dramatcially placed railess ledge so Kirk can go and Save Pike. Which he does and they both beam Back to the Enterprise.

With the Red matter (the stuff which spock used to stop the shockwave from the Star Trek Countdown comics. Dw its explained better in the film than Ive done here :p) on the Jellyfish combusing inside the Narada, it creates another Black hole Temporal Wormhole thing inside the Narada tearing it apart. Kirk offers assistance to Nero but instead he gets a very Khan ish "I SPIT my last breath at thee!" (He doesnt say that, but something along those lines) reply as the Narada explodes inside the black hole. Of course, they arent out the woods yet. The Black hole starts to suck the Enterprise In. The ship goes to Warp to no avail as the Black hole does suck alot ;) and so Scotty has the idea of jettisoning the Warp core.

This is the ONLY bit which I can see pissing off Techies. Instead of one big Warp Core which were usually accustomed too, 12 or so mini warp cores shoot out the back of the Enterprise into the anomaly, detonating it and thus saving the ship.

Last part coming up next...

Well, I have a very tall tale to tell...

I'm glad you had a good time (and great av, if I didn't say so elsewhere) but this really belongs in the pinned spoiler discussion thread, so moving there now...

Actually, they just wanted to make sure we shut them down. Some of my friends kept their phones ;)

Last part coming up next...

SONOVABITCH.

I have been waiting for 30 years or more for someone else to see that particular use for antimatter. There goes my novel...

I went to the UK premiere and saw the movie in Screen 2.
It was a fantastic experience to put on the suit and walk the blue carpet.
It felt like a very special way to watch this movie and an experience I will never ever forget.
The walk on the carpet was brief but it did feel like being a celebrity and gave you that taste of what its like to be an actor. I wanted to stay on their longer to see the actors but was concerned with looking cool so I pressed on.
The guy I got the ticket off advised me to hang back a bit and be on the carpet with the actual stars but all guests were to be seated at 7.00pm.
JJ and co didn't arrive into screen 2 to us till well after that time.
It wouldnt have been possible to loiter on the carpet and when you saw everyone going into the theatre, the compulsion to walk on was overwhemling!.

In my screening, JJ, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana were among the guests introducing the movie and they said a few words about the film.
Zachary got the biggest cheer when introduced.

To verify my fan status and give you a barometer to measure how a die hard like myself felt about the movie, I have all the DVD'S and have seen everything several times over. The movie itself is simply incredible.
It's a non stop roller coaster of action that doesn't pause for breath from the moment it starts.
Within about 2 or 3 minutes in the first scene, you care about some characters that you have literally seen for the first time ever.
The days of star trek crew members sitting around talking about problems in the captains ready room are well and truly over.
This crew simply don't have time for that!.

Visually, this movie surpasses everything that has gone before.
In fact, it is the best looking Sci-fi movie I have ever seen.
The scale of the sets and the variation of locations in the scene will astound you. The cinematographhy is exceptional work.
The effetcs that the team have achieved including all the flaring lightning on the bridge and the fact that the camera doesn't stop moving for the duration.
The engineering room is so impressive it will blow you away.
Nimoy was telling the truth when he said it will be hard to take Trek back to TV. Unless TV can get a 100 million budget to make an episode and improves its technical standards to get it to this level, it would simply be underwhelming to get a a new TV show that didn't look as good and feel as well paced as this.
If movies are the future of Trek, then it will defintiely be worth waiting a few years between productions.

To hear Beastie Boys "Sabotage" in a Star Trek movie is a breath of fresh air. Another subtle bit was when Nero pops on the viewscreen and goes "Hey Chris" to Pike. Prime Spock mentions "Admiral Archer's Beagle", Kirk in bed with an Orion girl.
Spock and Uhura relationship!, surprising but this is new Trek.
Trust me, go with it, the movie is unbelieveablely good.
Right now, I feel like I can't watch my Trek TV or movie DVD's for a while.
They aren't XI. I plan to see it several more times before it ends it's run.
I can't wait for it to be on Blu-Ray either.
For those yet to see it, you are in for a thrill ride.
At least one person I could visibly tell didn't like it was a guy wearing a Starfleet uniform to a major movie premiere. That says alot.
He was visibly seething when it ended and he was exhaling and looked shaken. I could hear him say loudly, "This is unsound". In his broken English he was essentially griping about the perceived continuity issues.
People stuck in the past probably won't like this movie. If you want to see Trek move on, you definitely will.

I can't wait till everyone else sees it to hear your opinions on it.
