World Premiere/Advance screening discussions [SPOILERS GUARANTEED]

Just saw it at the UK premiere against all the odds (literally).

It was bloody amazing. :D

(Meaning I have it all freshly engraved on my mind if peeps want a spoilin') :p

I know the basic plot more or less. My questions are "details" (Dennis would call them "nitpicks") but I'm curious:

1) In the trailers we heard the classic "red alert" siren. Did that make it into the film? Were any other "classic" sound fx (like the bridge instruments, communicator "chirrping", etc) used?

2) Were there any hand phaser shootouts?

3) How many space combats were there, and how good were they?

4) How many other sets besides the Bridge, Transporter, Corridors, and Engineering do we see?

1) Yes, If not THE Red Alert a VERY VERY Similar version is used. Many of the acknowledgement chirps and beeps are indeed the same.

2) Yes, one really frantic one on the Narada.

3) Technically only 2 battles we see, but they are spectacular. The Final battle in particular is the only time ive cheered in a film. Best special effects i've ever seen.

4) Sickbay and the Shuttlebay are featured in the film, especially the Shuttlebay on both the Kelvin and Enterprise.

Are the fx as "hot" as they appear in the trailers? By which I mean in the trailers they appear to be VERY brightly lit (almost overexposed) and "harsh", as opposed to the "cooler" fx Trek has typically done (using "Enterprise" as an example.)

Oh, and I fogot: do we actually SEE Kirk take the Kobi, or is it something that happens "off screen"?

When Pike is given the first command of the Enterprise, is it in "our" timeline before Nero destroys the Kelvin, or after in the alt universe?

Spoilers: Kobayashi Maru

I know we see the scenario in the movie, and I know the Klingons are supposedly used in it, but here is what I want to know.

What do their ships look like! Are they D-7s?

This really belongs in the spoilers discussion thread. Moving there now...

I posted it outside because everyones too busy bitching in this thread to be able to tell much of anything and I just wanted a simple question answered. For every spoiler at this point we have 10 posts of whining.

I thought it might be something like that, and I understand where you're coming from about the whining, but having a lot of spoiler discussion threads outside the designated spoiler thread kind of defeats its purpose and ups the chances of accidentally spoiling the movie for someone who's been trying to steer clear of that.

Would someone be so kind as to help Falconfire out here?

M', doesn't know the answer yet, but try here

Yes, with subtle updates though. One thing I noticed was that the forward Torpedo launchers had a similar "cowl" over them like the new Nacelles have. The shape is identical though.

What is the intro shot of the Enterprise? Is it when she is docked at the spacestation?

Yup, its the first shot of the Enterprise they released a while back, I know alot of people hated it, but in motion with some amazing music it is a very special scene.

When Pike is given the first command of the Enterprise, is it in "our" timeline before Nero destroys the Kelvin, or after in the alt universe?

Alt Universe. Although It is mentioned that when the Enterprise launches with the fleet to Vulcan its her Maiden Voyage. So Pike is technically captain of the Enterprise for the better part of an hour :p

When Nero yells, "FIRE EVERYTHING!" is he trying to destroy the Enterprise?

No, he's firing at Spocks Time ship, the Jellyfish.

Dac, you must've missed this earlier:

I'm just back home from London having attended the premiere last night in Leicester Square. I'll give a more detailed review in a while but, suffice it to say, it's FANTASTIC!!!!!

I met JJ and Chris, both of whom signed and personalised autographs for me. Chris wrote: "Ian, Beam me Up!! Chris Pine"

God, I was on cloud 9 last night, just coming down now.

I laughed, I cried (twice), I can't remember when I had such a wonderful cinema experience.

More to come :techman:

So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Well, I have a very tall tale to tell...

I'd been trying to get tickets to the UK premiere for weeks prior. My mum god bless her was up till 3 am on some nights scouring the net. She and I both entered at least 10 competitions from all over the place to get tickets. I got sniped on eBay with 4 seconds to go to get one ticket for £60.

Long story short, day before the premiere I was talking to some guy on eBay who had em for £450, he was offering me £340. Way too rich for my blood so it looked like I wasn't going to get any. Fast forward to the thread here that mentioned following the UK premiere on twitter, I clicked the link and entered the competition which was going to be drawn at 4.30. 4.30 came and went and at 5 o'clock they announced the winner. That person never got back to them. 15 minutes later ANOTHER winner. 15 minutes later than that, My mum was just like "sod it, gimmie the phone" and calmly mentioned how she wasnt the winner, but all the winners they had picked were in Cambridge of Sheffield - both a considerable distance away from London and that we could get there within the hour. Passed the phone to me, asked for my screenname and phone number and said they'd get back to me. Phone back 3 minutes later to say "Get to London ASAP".

Cue the fastest ever smart dressing and train ride/taxi combo evar.

After the longest shortest dressing ive ever had in old "smart" clothes I havent worn for years :p me and my dad got a lift to the train station and we were on our way.

Less than one hour later I was walking the "Blue" Carpet where I literally bumped into Jeremy Clarkson (Sorry Jezza) and Eric Bana.

!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I had hung around on the carpet longer, but to be honest I was overwhelmed by it all...just over an hour earlier I was resigned to the fact I lost my last chance of going and now I was there was nothing less than amazing.

I went into the cinema, got my "Star Trek UK Premiere Popcorn" (:p) and sat down waiting for the film to start. 10 minutes go by, 15, 20 - were now past the start time - 25 minutes, then In walks Simon Pegg. Then Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and John Cho right in front of me (I was in the front row)! They gave a little introduction to the movie about how much they loved it, had a giggle around and hoped we enjoyed the film (I got video of this on my iPhone, will probably upload it to youtube later, its iffy quality as I wasnt sure if i were allowed to video so you see my hands clapping when I put it down ;)).

Then it started.

WOW.

The whole movie is nothing short of spectacular, but the single strongest moment is by far the opening scene.

I'll even go as far to say its the best opening of anything I have ever seen.

The EXTREME close up on the Kelvin which slowly zooms out to reveal the most spectacular beauty shot of a starship. The roaring star its flying by and the hulk of a ship which feels real moving toward a giant "lightning storm in space".

Badass Captain Robau walks on to the bridge and barks commands at people as the whole bridge is a flutter with activity over what the hell that thing is they can see out there. Cue the big entrance of the Narada. And boy, is it BIG.

I remember seeing First Contact when I was 7. And the Borg creeped the hell out of me. The entrance of the Narada and the feel of the unknown which floods the screen is just nothing short of terrorfying especially knowing what happens to the ship. Then all hell breaks loose.

As the ship gets swiss cheesed by the Narada's super dooper torpedoes* (From here on in the official name :p) the one thing I couldnt shake was how real it felt. I dont want to call all the treks that came before it wooden, but, I cant help it. It First Contact feels wooden compared to this scene. Enterprise - hoooooly shit there isnt a word for how that show would look compared to this (And I really liked Enterprise :p).

Nero pops up on screen and asks Badass Robau to come to his ship, which he does without thinking knowing its the only way he can save his crew. "You are the Captain now Mr Kirk." - The soundbite weve heard in the TV spots, not directed at James T, but George Kirk.

Badass Robau goes to the Narada, which given the backstory from Countdown feels alot more like a Borg vessel than a Romulan one (Namely Scotty's line from later on in the film - "If they're layout makes any sense you'll be in the Cargo bay with nowt a soul in sight." - Guess where that goes wrong :techman:. As Badass Robau gets to the bridge of the Narada, Nero questions Badass Robau with fancy floating hand thrown hologram thingies. Kinda hard to describe but think minority report in three dimensions without the gloves. Thats the kind of interface Narada has.

After Badass Robau gives Nero the cold shoulder but eventually gives him the stardate (The conveniently changed 2233.4 i THINK it was - Dont hold me to that) Badass Robau lets Nero stab him in the chest with his staff of power thingy killing Robau. At least thats what he wanted him to think. If you look carefully at the top middle bottom left upper right portion of the screen you can see Robau roll off the edge of the platform and escape on one of the Super Dooper Torpedoes which he rides into space like Dr Strangelove. Robau is no ones bitch.

Meanwhile on the U.S.S. KELVIIIIIN! First Officer George Kirk orders the evacuation of the crew in shuttles - including his Wife who is in Labour with James Kirk.
I'll leave the crazy detailed description here, as this is the emotional highlight of the film and as much as ive spoiled, I wouldnt want to spoil this moment. Its perfectly tragic and I loved it.

Wow, Ive written all this about the first 10 minutes. Yikes. Better post this for now so I dont loose it all, but I'll be posting a review of the rest of the film later on :P

Ah, sorry. The opening battle is Hot because it takes place in the orbit of a roaring sun :p

The final battle has a much cooler colour temperature because it takes place in deep space. :)

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

Hey Dac, I was there as well. Wasn't it incredible? Our crowd cheered when Leonard Nimoy came on screen!!
What screen where you in? We had JJ, Chris and Zachary introducing the film in screen 3. The popcorn was a nice touch. Did you manage to get any autographs?
I bumped into Richard Hammond after the movie having spoken to Nick Frost before it.

It was an amazing night, great work on getting the tickets (£450 is crazy. Mine were £70 from the Prince's Trust - good on your Mum :techman:).

Re: So, I went to the UK Premiere...(SPOILERS)

I was in Screen 4. A really tiny one and Im sure we got out like half hour before everyone else because I was supposed to have a mini interview with the guy from the Star Trek Twitter. I hung around for about 10 minutes but it had gone 10 and I needed to get the last train home :P

There was a few cheers when Nimoy came, but when The Enterprise came out of Warp and blew the Narada's torpedoes out of the sky, THAT got the biggest cheer out of everyone and had me screaming "YES!". It was the money shot :P
