Kings

Why are fans so concerned about backstory and wondering if the world in Kings is a divergence from ours. I seem to remember a little movie called Star Wars which began its story in the middle!

Because Star Wars wasn't an alternate history. That's the point of alternate histories: to explore the consequences of a divergence in the established history.

Ok, everyone repeat after me: "Kings is not alternative history!"

Got that? Kings is a modern day retelling of the story of David. That's it. Whatever could be brought right from the Bible to the modern world was, whatever needed to be updated was. Hence Goliath is a tank, Samuel is a Reverend instead of a prophet. Real classical music was used so the viewer could identify it, but it doesn't matter what country the composer lived in, or even when he composed it. Whatever is not relevant to the story of David is not included. Just sit back and enjoy the characters/ride. There will never be an explanation for the world, or an examination of the branching point because it doesn't exist.

You mean the David and Goliath story that they all identified with in the press? Which is exactly why such a big deal was made of it all to begin with? Hence the "David slays Goliath!" headlines; not really something you'd say if you weren't identifiying with the story.

Yeah, not an alternative history at all. Except for the fact that it is, you know, an alternative history. Including the existance of the composer Liszt and all the other myriad clues seeping into the story.

The thing that seems to make people like you boggle is that they're specifically not focusing on the fact that it is -- and it most assuredly is -- an alternative history. They're instead focused on the story they want to tell and expecting the audience to be intelligent enough to figure everything else out.

To say it's not an alternative history is just asinine and ignorant.

Lizst or not, we haven't seen a world map so we don't even know if it's Earth or not.

As a non-sci-fi show, however, I doubt any of these questions will ever be addressed.

I, for one, seem to be thinking it's set on Kobol, thousands of years before nuBSG. That's be a pretty interesting idea, no?

David is the guy's name. Goliath is the name of the tank. What else are you going to use for a catchy three-word headline or soundbyte?
