Pros and cons of Franz Joseph's plans

Let's try this... as per sojourner...

Hey Praetor, thanks for sharing my published works like that. Here I thought one had to purchase the model kit to enjoy every aspect of it including the diagrams.

I just found my copy of the Polar Lights instructions, so I made some scans and thought I'd share them here for those who'd like to conduct their own efforts based from them, since they are generally thought to be fairly accurate.

Thomas Sasser included some deliberate errors in those instructions, precisely so that folks like us couldn't do what we're trying to do.

Y'see, Paramount is rather paranoid regarding their plans of the model (based on actual measurements of the thing), so any derivative work based upon those plans has to have a roadblock or two thrown up as a defensive measure.

Mr. Sasser, I humbly and sincerely apologize. They are gone and will not return. I feel like a complete jerk in every conceivable way, especially since I'm so nitpicky when it comes to this sort of thing. I had no malicious intent whatsoever. :(

Well, just describe what you're thinking of, and we'll take lt from there.

Meanwhile, let's give photobucket another whirl...

YES! Anywho, this is my deck three WIP with the botony lab from "The Man Trap" shoehorned in there, any thoughts?

And here, per Whorfin's suggestion (below) are some pics (originally from Trekcore) of the Botony lab set for comparison, sorry for the not so good quality.

Hey gang, been very busy offline. Just needed to finish something up.

A week or two ago I asked FalTorPan and Dave Shaw for explicit permission and guidelines as to how to use their images in my posts (hosting, branding, etc.). FalTorPan answered publicly, Dave did so privately. At the time I thought Dave just didn't want to clutter the list with personal traffic, so I thanked him publicly as well as privately, because I was grateful and didn't want people to think he had ignored my request and I was just doing whatever I wanted with his work. However, I now realize that the message was confidential. So I now publicly apologize and point out my error, for thanking Dave Shaw publicly for his private kindness, I meant no offense by this. I apologize to everyone else for going off-topic (again) with this post, but I prefer to square things up as best as I can.

+++++++++

Tin_Man, keep up the good work. Inserting/linking a screen cap might help us appreciate your accuracy (just a suggestion). You'll have the whole ship revamped in no time!

^^ Which is one reason, no doubt, why FJ gave us the amalgamation that he did?

It was a completely different ballgame then. Paramount had supposedly retained no Star Trek documentation, and had none for FJ when he was asked to work on a U.S. postal stamp of the ship. They were very glad to have FJ work on the project because at the time, other than syndication, I don't think the franchise was making money from any other media (at least not much). Other than a few novels, some comic books and strips, and some toy merchandising Trek was non-producing at this point (meaning nothing compared to what it is today) -- AFAIK. TAS and Phase II were still on the horizon, or not yet conceived. So Paramount had no "secret plans" to hide, if anyone did it was MJ, and its not clear to me that he participated with FJ at all. FJ did this on his own, GR thought he could figure out a way to sell it (probably through Lincoln Enterprises), appears to have eventually balked at how to get around Paramount owning the rights, FJ got tired of GR's lack of response on actual publication, went to Paramount to clear matters up, and GR was cut out in terms of money and control of the IP. When FJ didn't give him profuse thanks in the Technical Manual that was pretty much it as far as GR was concerned.

^^Thanks for the tip Whorfin, I'll start doing that!

In regards to Photobucket issues, I did a test and don't believe its possible to post or PM the correct syntax (at least without mucking it up), because the BBS software just takes the code and displays it the way an image is intended to be displayed.

But in general it shouldn't be this hard (though I had issues staring out myself). Check the post fixed at the top of the Art area regarding image width, I got some advice in there and mentioned a couple of things that can get overlooked on Photobucket (i.e., should be default, IMHO).

http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=82922

Normally in Photobucket you have areas where you can highlight the URL info and copy it, depending upon if you want an image displayed in full, a link URL, or a thumbnail, etc. I take it these aren't those showing up? By default I think they show up when you hover the mouse over the image. It was difficult for me to even copy these until I changed an optional setting so they are always displayed below the image. I would guess you are having similar issues. If scripting is disabled (as a security measure for the browser) they may not show up at all). Remember thumbnail view is best for larger images, for reasons of board bandwidth and going over 800x600 makes the post thread wider than some people's displays (and makes it more difficult to read for most everyone, IMHO).

Please PM me an email address if you want additional help, and I'll email the proper syntax.

Thanks, but I think I'm figuring it out, I got the url info permanantly displayed now, and I'm going to keep experimenting until I figure it all out?

Here's my deck seven '2cnd/3rd season' WIP, let me know what you think.

And here's a pic from trekcore of the 'hearing room' as seen in "Turnabout Intruder" for comparison.http://tos.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/3x24/turnaboutintruder_156.JPG

And here's another from the same ep. showing what I dub the 'Minimum Security' medical isolation ward, which I put where FJ had an 'obstetrics ward'.http://tos.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/3x24/turnaboutintruder_070.JPG

and a pic from "The Way To Eden" showing what I term the 'Maximum Security' medical isolation ward, which I put in place of FJ's 'convalescent ward'.

Ummmmm... just a few nit-picky questions - it is my turn afterall!

- did you intentionally switch the Briefing Room and the Chapel?
- how does a turbolift get to the secondary hull?
- what happened to the Emergency Bridge?

Of course if you've answered any or all of these questions somewhere else, please just point me to the answers... enquiring minds and all that!

^^Actually, I was anticipating these questions, and sincere thanks for asking, I was begining to think I was wasting my (and everyones) time.

So, the briefing room; yes, I switched it on purpose, this has to do, on the one hand, with the fact that I moved the chapel to deck four, in place of that BR, because I think the CPL (as seen in the series) works better there? And on the other hand, I had to have space for the "hearing room" (both 1st and 3rd season versions), I could, of course, have left the deck 7 BR where it was, but I thought perhaps it made more sense to have the HR near the security section, and also the 3rd season HR ("Turnabout Intruder") has a second door (to the left of the camera) which necessitates that there be a hallway behind the 'invisible 4th wall', so I flip/floped them, but I did add the "temporary holding cell" (seen onscreen in many ep.s) near the new BR location.

The turbolift shaft goes the same way, it's just longer now on dorsal deck 8, this was just my attemp to compromise somewhat, with what we saw onscreen, with the hallway leading to engineering, and still entegrate with FJ's plans.

The Emergency bridge is now the 'Auxiliary control' as in the series (on deck 8 per "I Mudd", I think), I just swapped the center of deck 7 and 8, I'm still working to get that the way I want it, and it's still very much a WIP at this point, but I'll post a pic anyway.

Oh, and did you notice, I rearanged FJ's lounges, so that the small forward one now corrosponds to the 'lone window' in this location (below the deck 6 row of widows/portholes? I thought this was rather clever of me, IMHO, and Im rather proud of myself. :)

Here's my take on the chapel, which I relocated to deck four because I felt the set as built integrated better here, with its doors on both sides rather than one on the end as one would expect. This configuration at least partly explains why it would be the way we see it? I know people will say there's no reason for the Chapel to be on this deck, but I would counter that there's no reason why it can't be either? You can see that I'm toying around with a more screen accurate shape for this, and other command superstrcture decks.

and a pic from trekcore http://tos.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/1x14/balanceofterror001.jpg

And, as promised, here's my deck 8 WIP, I'm still not satisfied with auxiliary control but it's coming along slowly but surely. You'll notice Ive done away with FJ's "entertainment center" and replaced it w/ the holographic rec rooms mentioned in TMoST and seen in TAS. My eventual plan is to make each of the three rec rooms corrospond to three enviroments we saw in "Practical Joker". I've also included the 'main life support' that we saw in "Wink of an Eye" with a staircase going down to the deck below, which at least partly explains why there was an angled screen/grill in the center of the room.

Nice work! I don't see any reason to question the chapel's placement - it doesn't even have to be used as a chapel all the time. The rest of the time it could be some kind of multi-purpose meeting room. I really like what you've done with deck seven and eight, particularly with making the 'emergency bridge' into auxiliary control. Same thing for my money. Nice addition with the holographic recreation center, too. That could double as your bowling alley... ;)

Incidentally, are you planning to retain the secondary hull bridge in some form? If so, may I suggest replacing it with an auxiliary-control set layout type setup, and perhaps moving it from being directly behind the deflector? (Same goes for the swimming pool.) :p

Thanks, glad you like it! As for the the secondary hull bridge, for now it stays the same, same w/ the swimming pool. I'm mainly concentrating on just tweaking FJ's plans, where they need to match those corresponding areas that we saw onscreen, but eventually, who knows?
