Kings

I have to wonder if we're going to get an explanation of where the timeline diverged or if they're not going to veer into sci-fi territory at all. Since they have the legend of David and Goliath, it must be Earth up to some point in history (not to mention all the societal/technological similarities), as opposed to, say, being on another planet ... so, do we find out what happened? They haven't even suggested it yet, which makes me think they want to stick to drama rather than sci-fi/fantasy.

On Sunday night's show, the very small portion of the map they showed looked like Washington state/Canada to me, with our present US/Canada border being the border between Gath and Golgoth.

Oh, and I agree: very smart show with a lot to think about. Thus, it will be canceled after one season.

I don't think there was a diverging point for this world. It's just an alternate world that's ALWAYS been different.

I don't think they're going to delve in where history diverged (and it's pretty obvious that we have a shared history with them; it's just really hard to tell what's the same and what isn't). They did the right thing by completely skipping all of that and just delving straight into the story.

Looking into the history of the setting is something that should be put aside for future seasons if the show becomes popular. To do it now would just waste time from the story they want to tell. They've already set the stage; there's no reason to go into the minutae of it since it doesn't really affect the story.

The most recent episode of Kings scored a whopping 3.63 million viewers. It's definitely canceled.

Do they have the legend of David and Goliath, though? I've been watching the show, but I've missed some portions of it while I've been off doing other things around the house - a bit ADD, I guess ;); I've never heard any reference by the characters to the story of David and Goliath, and it would be somewhat absurd for them to know the legend in the context that they, themselves, are executing it - as deeply influenced as they are by their religion, they'd know what the outcome will be, and that couldn't be good for Silas. So the divergence would have to be at least as far back as the writing of the book of "1 Samuel." I haven't seen where they've mentioned specifically what their predominant religion is, but clearly their bible has to be different if the story of David and Goliath is missing.

Honestly, this wouldn't bother me in the least. I like the show, but I don't think it is something that should be an ongoing series; it should've been a mini-series, and brought to a conclusion. Letting it play out will most likely water it down, as well.

yeah I think it's a problem with shows that begin on an epic scale . . . you can't just keep it going year after year

I'm really enjoying the show as well. The one thing I want is to understand the universe more. If it's our world that diverged, then when did it happen? If it's entirely different, then I'd love to know the history of it. I know none of that is really that important to the series. Overall, it feels a lot like what Caprica might feel like. Kind of our world, but different countries and borders. Just with less sci-fi.

Had they made David more true to life instead of a goody goody character I think this show would have had longer legs. Having him react to events instead of causing them is really hurting the direction. I like the inner palace politics but cant see it lasting very long. For a show called Kings we see absolutely no potential for David to be a king. Ah well I will enjoy Ian Mcshane for as long as he is on the screen.

I don't think they did until the first episode.

As for going into the histroy, etc. of the world Kings happens in: a little at a time , maybe, but we shouldn't get oo much of it, IMO. Some things are just better left to the imagination.

Well, crap. :klingon:

They might as well just put a bullet in its head.

I hope we at least get to see all 13 episodes.

I liked the premiere, and it's fun watching actors like Ian McShane and Leslie Bibb have fun with the fancy-pantsy dialogue (not all actors can pull it off) but ultimately there just isn't enough in it for me to care about. If David had been written or cast differently, maybe I'd hang in there. The notion of alternate history, and a world where we can't assume anything, is pretty interesting.

Its a derivative of the biblical story of King David set told in a way that's familiar to the modern American audience.

I wonder if this is a bit of Battlestar Galactica at work? Perhaps all this has happened before... kinda thing

Watched the series premier again last night on SciFi. Thinking about it again, it's something of a loop - the tanks are named Goliaths, but they must be named that for a reason, and yet if the story exists in their bible, someone must be pretty blind to not see all of the signs in their current situation.

Best not to think about this stuff, huh? :)

Hmmm, okay. So why was the biblical Goliath named Goliath? You're right, we probably shouldn't pick thuis apart too much and just enjoy it.

Duh, he was named after a Biblical tank.

;)

Why are fans so concerned about backstory and wondering if the world in Kings is a divergence from ours. I seem to remember a little movie called Star Wars which began its story in the middle! There was just enough backstory to get the viewers up to speed. I see the same thing with Kings. In the pilot, we were introduced to two warring nations, Gath and Gilboa, which are modern monarchies, and the main character is a lowly soldier who was thrust into a world of political intrigue after one heroic act. What more do you need to know? Who cares how those nations came to be or why they were at war. It doesn't matter if it takes place in the future or some alternate reality. Just relax, and get sucked into their world.
