Things I love about Star Trek

I agree with most of the points already raised, so I'll just emphasize one particular one: I love that Trek is about ideas. Even the cheesiest of episodes (I nominate TOS's "Spock's Brain" ;) ) attempted to deal with a Big Idea. It failed, of course, but when Trek tackles a Big Idea and nails it...well, TV just doesn't get much better.

And at the same time it's tackling these big ideas, it's fun. Gotta love that!

I LOVE the character development on DS9. Unparalleled!

Agreed on all points, but this line right here I just had to mention along with Casey Biggs. The guy was a genius with his character. I remember the first few episodes with Damar and just hating the guy for being a sniveling, sneering opportunistic right-hand man with no guts for himself (and this was even before the war!). But as he gained more and more screen time, I started to wonder why I hated Damar so much, and reasoned that it was because of Biggs' excellent acting. He went out of his way to make Damar memorable, as villain and as conflicted pawn. Damar under any other actor would have been a far lesser character.

Quoted for Absolute Truth!

I think that Bigg's understated acting made Damar a believable Cardassian. He played Damar as a honest, simple and uncomplicated man. I think it may have been on other website or in a piece of fanfiction but there was a particular phrase that was used about Damar, that he was a man who would look you in the eye when he talked to you and meant everything he said.
In my mind Damar was never the villain, he was the misunderstood hero, a man who was completely loyal to his people and who believed in Cardassia.
This was a man whom Dukat lied to and tried to recreate in his image. This left Damar with a inferiority complex as he believed that he could never match up to Dukat or the high standards set by the Cardassian state.

When Damar killed Ziyal I think he began to realise that, at least on a subconscious level, that the system and ideas that he had lived under were wrong and did not serve the Cardassian people.
(In fact in my have been sooner than that. Witness Damar's heavy drinking from season six onwards, a guilty conscience about the alliance with the Dominion?).
From the start of his supposed 'leadership' of Cardassia Damar became a weak and pathetic figure, a drunkard who used what power he had to chase women and developed a passive aggressive relationship with Weyoun.

In my personal view this all stems from his sense of inferiority. Damar knew that he could not be the leader that Cardassia deserved and as a loyal patriot he despised himself for being a failure. Of course with the Dominion slowly turning the Cardassians into second class citizens the pain grew even worse.

At a certain point Damar finally broke free of his indoctrination and the tissue of Dukat's lies and became the man he truly was, a rebel.

When Damar became a revolutionary he gained both redemption and the status of one of the most iconic characters in trek history.

To Legate Corat Damar, a true Cardassian legend!

what do i love?? everything... except for Enterprise, which i like a bit less than the rest

I thought of something else to love (when I was over in the "hate" thread, not coincidentally).

The ships. I am not a techie Trekker, and you can tell me anything you want to about nacelles and I will believe you, but I love the look of almost all the ships for different reasons - from the gloriously retro Daedalus to the Borg cubes to the scorpion-like Galor class to the Romulan warbird and of course all of our beloved Enterprises. Hardly a dog in the bunch!

I love that trek is about human beings. All the aliens, worlds, conflicts, sci fi fantasy shenanigans are basically allegory for human nature.

I also love that there is no money in the future.

Except for that bloody flea ship!:klingon:

The trek ship designs are pretty class, although I only like the DW era Starfleet ships (Akira,Defiant,Nova and Prometheus). The Klingon and Romulan ships are neat and obviously I love the Cardassian ships.

The Daedalus are the best. I hope they make an appearance somewhere in the new film.

^^ Yes. I try not to even mention the flea ship because just thinking about it makes me feel itchy.

I do like the Galor class a lot, but...I don't think you know this about me, Thor, but I grew up in the Mojave Desert in Southern California. Lizards are nuthin', rattlesnakes don't bother me much, tarantulas are nothing more than big fluffy spiders...but scorpions just creep me out, and that's what the Galor class reminds me of. This isn't a bad thing - a warship should be ominous, not cute - but it does pretty much ensure that I'm not going to hang a photo of one where I can see it every night before I go to sleep.

Scorpions...brrrrrrrr...

I'm almost tempted to put a image of a Galor here...
but I won't.

To me the Galor resembles a manta ray on some level or some form of aquatic life but a scorpion works better considering Cardassia Prime's ecosystem.
The Galor also resembles the Cardassian symbol (also called a Galor) and for a people heavily into symbolism this would be a required trait for their flagship class.

^ Oh, you can post it - it's purty, no doubt about it (I looked it up before I posted to make sure I had the right ship in mind). It's just not a relaxing thing for me to look at.

To normal people, it probably does look like a manta ray. Even I can see that. But someone who has actually seen scorpions run up walls as though the walls were horizontal (and I don't even want to talk about how they'd sometimes get in the linen cupbard and hide in the sheets! eeeeeeeek!)...is no longer normal. So the resemblance to a manta ray is no doubt more striking, but it does look sort of scorpion-ish, too. I'm pretty sure I'm not making it up.

Wow I'm glad to see that someone else likes them!

Ships are definitely something I love about Trek. I think the thing that got me into TNG (or got me to pay attention to it for more than five minutes) was 'ooh, look at the hardware...'

I've always thought the Galor seemed scorpion-like myself, too. The idea of it seems to fit well with the Cardassian mentality - strike when it's least, expected with deadly force!

As for the flea ship? *shudder*

I like the idea. The Galor, a ship with a sting in it's tail!

(and with this post I'm now officially a Gul!)

Congrats, Gul Damar!! :)

I do see what you mean about the scorpion...but I tend to see manta ray as well.

BTW, Thor Damar--I'm curious where you saw the name for the Union symbol, that it's also called a "galor"?

A few things:

- The relationship and comraderie in TOS between Kirk and Spock - the whole "brothers across the stars" thing.
- McCoy. Old fashioned country doctor. A safe, dependable hero.
- The sense of adventure, travelling the stars, meeting aliens, being in space. It all seemed impossible stuff to 11 year old me, stuck in 1970's black and white Britian!
- Characters who will uphold their principles when push comes to shove
- Hopefulness for the future.
- Kirk. There's something about him that I adore. I grew up watching him. He was the very definition of "Starship captain" to me and I guess he always will be.
- TNG's ship and design style. TNG appeared when I was a young adult. It was modern Trek for me. It was Trek but with tech, fashions and designs I could relate to
- Will Riker. I spent the best part of my 20's in love with him. How my husband tolerated it is anyone's guess. Handsome man who contributed endlessly to my fannish enjoyment.
- TMP. After so many years in the wildnersness, Trek came back. With a film! It seemed like a mircacle.
- Fandom. I've been involved in fandom for over 30 years. Fandom never ceases to amaze me with its ability to create stuff; get things done; organise stuff and subvert the source material.

Actually from your fan-fiction mostly though I did read it somewhere on the Ex Astris Scienta site.

It's an interesting article particularly the part about Dukat's Orange year:rommie:.
To be honest I've probably made up the name for the Union's symbol based upon the fact that it resembles the Galor Class warships.

Thanks for the congratulations, Jagul Ghemor!;)

Hm...I'm not sure I ever called it a Galor symbol. "Union sigil" is the term I tend to use. ("Sigil" translates...well...I think I'll have to explain that by PM later today, as well as what I use "galor" to mean. I feel like a long Cardassian Monologue (TM) is on the way... ;) )

Excellent! (check my sig out BTW).

Yeah I guess I made it up on the fly. Your Idea might work better(I'm looking forward to the PM now!:rommie:)

Oh did you read my little essay about Damar earlier?, I would be interested to see what people think of it.

Finally someone who loves Damar just as much as I do. :)

Oh, something else I love: before I joined this place, I didn't even know what a nacelle was!

I love that trek is about human beings. All the aliens, worlds, conflicts, sci fi fantasy shenanigans are basically allegory for human nature.

And on that note, another addition to our "love" thread (that, again, came to me when I was looking at the "hate" thread): I love it when Trek makes subtle cultural references that add to the plot. For example, the parallels between the Cardassians of the occupation and the Nazis when they occupied France were definitely there, but pretty subtle. Less subtle but still highly effective were the parallels between the Cardassians and the Japanese occupation of Korea - the "comfort women" and all that.

These were effective because they weren't forced on you - even if you knew nothing about history, they still resonated, and if you did, that familiarity added an extra layer of chill. At least it did for me.

It helped turn Dukat into one fascinating monster.
