Things I love about Star Trek

Theoretically. It was the same guy, but not necessarily the same character. ;)

In my mind it was. And there was Colonel Worf granddaddy of microbrain.

In the minds of the authors of the Trekpedia, too.

And yes, Worf, father of Mogh, father of Worf. Why can't the Klingons come up with original names? (At least Alexander lucked out and got named by his mother.) Then again, they can't come up with original ship designs.

Of course, Martok had the good sense not to name Drex after Martok's father. But Martok is a rather extraordinary Klingon.

Another thing I like about Trek: Martok. (Even if he doesn't understand the inappropriateness of drinking bloodwine among Cardassia's honored dead. I can imagine the Cardassians might have done the same, replacing bloodwine with kanar of course.)

I dunno, I would imagine that a Cardassian would have more...style than that.:shifty:
Besides Kanar should be drunk to celebrate your victory not necessary the deaths of millions who happen to be members of the same species that you have fought a war with.
I assume it's the same with Romulan Ale.

That's something else on the list of the good stuff, Alien alcohol:bolian:

^ Alien alchohol that comes in cool colors and cool glassware, too! I mean, after all, I don't get to taste it so I might as well enjoy looking at it.

Romulan ale always looked suspiciously like blue KoolAid to me... :shifty:

Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like KoolAid. :)

OOOkay I need to ask this, everytime I read some American rant againist Obama I see the pharse 'drank the Kool Aid'.
Could an American take pity on this poor young limey and explain exactly what the frak Kool aid ACTUALLY is?
(Please, this has been bugging me for ages:confused:)

I also second JustKate's point about Glass designs, my namesakes (many) kanar glasses where artfully done in my opinion.

Whenever I go to a bar that serves Hypnotiq, I order it and I like to pretend that it's Romulan Ale in color, taste, and sheer impact on my poor brain cells. They're dying just so that I can self-indulgently cosplay in a bar...!

Also, another thing I love about Trek: All the shapes of liquid containers (glasses, mugs, etc)

I like that image!
To me Romulan Ale looks more like a Spirit rather than an ale.Is it misnamed?

Also one more funny thing to do with the ale of Romulus, Worf with a hangover:guffaw:

KoolAid is a powder you mix with water to form a kid's drink. 'drank the KoolAid' is a reference to a cult that mixed poison with the KoolAid killing all its members.

Ah, now I get it. Thank's for the info WHF.

It was the Jonestown Massacre - very, very, very odd thing. Here's a little news story, if you're interested (it's a Wiki article, but it's accurate as far as I can remember): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown

The phrase "drank the KoolAid" has come to mean "is irrevocably dedicated to." So, to use an example from my very own actual life, if someone joins a public official's staff and all of a sudden will only say relentlessly positive things about anything that public official is involved in, even if those things directly contradict things that he'd said just a month before joining the staff, we would say he "drank the KoolAid."

I hate KoolAid, but yeah, Romulan ale does look like blue KoolAid quite a bit. The ale might be a bit more syrupy...

Got to agree Cardassians are amongst the most developed and ultimately sympathetic races seen in Trek - they began as conquering heroes and ended up guests on their own world. Kind of a cautionary tale. Damar went from being a villian you loved to hate to a hero you would've followed.

Trek is in many ways about redemption writ large and small. Humanity overcomes three world wars to become a stabilizing force in the quadrant. Weekly epis showed us people overcoming fear and prejudice to reach out to someone unlike themselves in an effort to do the right thing.

And of course Spock and Sarek and T'Pol and Soval and Saavik and Tuvok and Vorik and . . . .

This is exactly what I was talking about, Damar. No specific political correlation implied. I just like KoolAid. :)

If there were a Romulan Cider, I bet I would like it more anyway. ;)

That is really good, oldstredshrtevr. I never thought of it that way, but yes -- all that optimism stuff that we talked about earlier in the thread, or at least a lot of it, comes down to redemption, including the redemption of the whole human race, not to mention the redemption of individual characters.

I thought of another thing I love about Trek, and this is even though I sometimes hate it, too, and that's how much the fans love it. Yes, I can and have gotten annoyed at and embarrassed for fans who take it a step or two or seventy-five too far, but when you come down to it, it's really cool that they care that much.

I mean, why else would we all be here?
