Comic book suggestions

I was in the same position about a year or so ago. Read Watchmen and enjoyed it enough to seek out more. Picked up Transmetropolitan and got hooked. Brilliant, satirical writing. Really made me a fan. Later picked up other great titled like Sandman, Preacher, 100 Bullets that I also really enjoyed. But Transmet is my favorite by far so far.

Didn't realize average price of a comic book is $2.99.

I'd agrue that the average price is more around $3.50

Marvel puts out around 50-60 books a month, it increases in summer due to events and mini-series tie ins. The per book price is something many a commentator from Newsarama to AICN etc has discussed. Of the books Marvel puts out every month close to half are already priced at $3.99 while the others are $2.99. Guess which regular books are $3.99? Thats right the more popular titles(which explains why ASM is $2.99 ).

DC isn't nearly as bad...yet.

So the average price is higher if you buy an assortment of Marvel offerings.

Arkham Asylum- A Serious Place on a Serious Earth

I enjoy Morrison's writing and looked through this book this weekend, but the artwork turned me off. I take it you think it's worth it, even though, in my opinion, the artwork looks muddied (which seems to fit with the theme, but still, it looked like I'd get a headache reading it!).

Is this the one which has the Doc Arkham as the main character?

I remember reading a TPB which had what looked like impressionist artwork and I did NOT like it. It was just hard to read. Plus Batman is barely there - (which doesn't automatically mean that things are bad).

Even though it's only a pretty short one-shot I'd also recommend Crécy by Warren Ellis. It's a fascinating and entertaining read with great artwork.

Warren Ellis is a ''VERY'' good writer. I'm currently reading two of his current ongoing series from AVATAR press, DOKTOR SLEEPLESS, NO HERO, Both books are excellent. I however prefer No Hero, tons more action & weirdness!

Nextwave is probably the best Marvel comic written in the last 15 years.

What do you mean "probably"?

have you been following the still Ellisesque Machine Mans adventures in Ms Marvel?

Well, I'm partial to Ennis's epic Punisher run myself. So it's about 50/50 for me.

Nah, I'm not a big Ms. Marvel fan. Nothing against her or anything, just never really cared enough about her.

read the original X-Men from the 60s and Giant-Sized X-Men of the 70s

This stuff is vintage like vinyl. Dated? Sure. But it's still got more heart and meaning and soul then any X-Men book put out in the last 15 years.

And yeah, Wein's and Claremont's dialogue is fun to make fun of. "Quickly Storm, use your power to control the weather to make a hurricane to take care of Mystique and Blob. Nightcrawler, I think it would a be a good idea for you to use that funny little ability of yours to teleport behind Magneto and knockhim out. Angel....er...yeah....why don't you go and use your ability to... flap.... and tell the others we're done here. Please stop crying...".

The Angel part I was kidding about. But yeah Claremonts famous for having his characters describe what their powers do every 5 lines. He's also famous for always introducing a character like "This is So-and so: And he is a mutant" every time a character would appear and then dramatically describe their powers in detail. But to be fair, this was still when comics were written for kids.

There was an editorial mandate in that era that every comic had to exposit on what all the characters' powers were at least once per issue, as well as their name, etc.

Claremont's famous because he reuses the same lines so much:

"My ruby quartz visor is the only thing that can contain my optic blast!"
"My psi-blade represents the focussed totality of my power!"

And so on.

Read the original X-Men from the 60s and Giant-Sized X-Men of the 70s

I think you have to sell a kidney to a black market dealer in Russia, who will remove it without anesthesia, to get a hold of a legit copy of that for decent price. :p

"Y The Last Man"

I saw one of the graphis novels the other day at the comic store, but I wanted to start at the beginning. So is this any good?

YES!
It's my favourite series ever, and one of the good things about it is that it had a definite ending, it's not an ongoing series that you'll have to keep up with forever.

I really recommend getting the trades! (In fact, I read the trades, then went out and got the individual issues I liked it so much, just last year. Maybe not the wisest thing financially.... :))
