To be fair, (and this is not a direct response/contrary argument to what you're saying, Cary, because I know you're talking about the TMP refit) I don't think they've yet said that the old one always looked like this. I may be wrong. It's not really a prequel. Different time-line and whatnot. It just (presumably) always looked like this in the reboot universe.
Now, you can easily argue that they made a bad stylistic choice, which I think a lot of people are saying. I personally don't like a lot of the interior choices way way more than the exterior, but I'm still not 100% sold on the exterior either. I'm just 'comforted' by the fact that we will hopefully be provided with a reason why it looks different, or enough that we can come up with a reason of our own (it was built later using more advanced tech, for example.)
I just can't see the 'it looks different' argument working anymore when this is a reboot set in a different timeline and there are easy fixes for this.
