A co-worker of mine on the second day of taking over as manager of our department yelled to me from her office "OMG! My computer is freaking out! I think I'm being hacked! Don, get in here quick!"

So, I go in and sure enough, her computer was scrolling crazily. I took her hand off the space bar and left.

Years ago I was in my work clothes (specific to the store, with logo, nametag etc.) in a completely different store. Another customer asked me something, and I politely said I didn't know as I didn't work there, and I told her where I worked... she didn't believe me, and made a show reading my shirt and reading the store name on it carefully...

But recently... in first aid, we were learning what to do for various injuries that involve open wounds, especially the bad bleeder ones... or if internal organs come out, etc. After learning it, one guy asked whether if he found a wounded person he could simply call 911 and stand back and wait for help. The instructor said of course you call the ambulance, but this is what you do til they arrive, and the 911 operator will have questions, so this will help the first aider to answer them. The guy answered -Why? I mean, it's not like the ambulance isn't going to come anyway... (And it's not like he was afraid of blood or something... he was just chalk full of dumb questions).

Sadly, this is what society has become. We don't stop and intercede but rather "make a phone call" to someone else who is trained to handle this situation. You know, "Please, don't try to stop a crime yourself. Call the police." Yeah, right, the police come to try to figure out what happened *after* it happened.

Similar story: When I was in the Navy, we were always trained aboard ship that if there's a fire to call the emergency number FIRST and then attempt to fight the fire. Naturally, people (such as myself) would ask if that were for something large or any fire i.e. trashcan fire. Nope, every fire. OK, but if I'm wasting time calling the emergency number rather than fighting the fire, it could spread and cause more damage. Nope, don't try to fight the fire.
