Spock at Academy

Kokomo

Commander
Red Shirt
Spock is seen wearing a gray uniform in the newest trailer. It appears that this scene takes place at the Academy. Is Spock a cadet or an instructor?

Looks like an instructor to me

My guess, old Spock convinced young Spock to join Starfleet earlier in his life

Wouldn't be out of character for Spock to have either been some sort of TA or to have had a stint as an instructor. I could see Spock doing so well academically that he'd be recruited to be an instructor right out.

No way man. It was Sybok. I think he and Spock went on a double date with Kirstie Allie Saavik and Robin Curtis Saavik. They both were into Kirstie Allie Saavik, but one Pon Faar cagematch later and Sybok got Kirstie Allie Saavik. Spock told him that "having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting." Sure enough, Kirstie Allie put on some weight. Sybok went crazy, and Spock joined Starfleet to escape the family drama.

Am I right or am I right that Spock (the prime timeline Spock) was actually the first Vulcan to enrol at Starfleet Academy or to serve in Starfleet? I remember that this caused trouble without end with his dad. So, due to his superior Vulcan intellect, the academy as such must have been a breeze for him, a kind of intellectual slumming, and he was already an instructor after the second semester or so...

P.S.
It kind of reminds me of myself... I graduated as a B.A. after only two semesters, did my B.A. (Honours) the next year, received a scholarship for a doctorate and became part-time lecturer at my university... which brought me into the more than weird situation to actually teach students who had started studying with me two years earlier!

The trouble with dad part is from the TOS episode Journey to Babel. The whole sPock being the first Vulcan in Starfleet, I dodn't recall being actually mentioned on-screen anywhere. I think that is just fandom apocrypha.

I hope we see/get mentions of Gary Mitchell and Finnegan. Maybe even Ben Finney if they're such longstanding figures in Kirk's Academy youth. Just because the timeline's been altered doesn't mean they can't show up. After all, the crew still ends up on the USS Enterprise in their familiar roles don't they?

The more things change...the more they stay the same.

In the altered timeline, I don't think Spock entered the Academy early or went through it any faster, I think Kirk entered it later. As I understand it, Kirk is well into his twenties before Pike finally convinces him to join Starfleet. It makes sense that Spock might have already been an instructor by that point.

^^ There is that, too. Kirk was already a bridge officer on Pike's Enterprise several years before Kirk took command. I always had the impression that Spock was older than Kirk and had been in Starfleet longer, he just never aspired to command and didn't rise through the ranks as quickly. No reason he couldn't have been an instructor at the Academy when Kirk was a cadet there even in the original timeline.

No, that's always been a fanfic assumption that has no on-screen basis. No canon reference whatsoever to Spock being the first Vulcan in Starfleet. Sarek had higher expectations for Spock, hence their dispute.

Also, the USS Intrepid ("The Immunity Syndrome") was manned by Vulcans - it would be a stretch to assume that none of them had entered Starfleet before Spock.

Sarek wanted Spock to follow his footsteps and enter the Vulcan Science Academy.

Wasn't he the first Vulcan to turn down the Vulcan Science Academy for Starfleet.

Especially if you take into account T'Pol joining Starfleet in the ENT era (assuming that ENT also takes place in the alternate universe that this new movie is in, and i dont see any indication why it wouldnt be).

I for one would enjoy seeing more aliens (humaniod and not) within the ranks of Starfleet in this new movie.

no.

you are somehow confusing him with tpau who turned down a seat on the federation council.

as for the clip.
spock sounded like an instructor. possibly a guest instructor bought in to get to the cadets just how nasty piece of work space can be.

some have speculated it could be leading into the kobayashi maru test.

Different Starfleet. T'pol joined Earth's Starfleet, not the Federation's.
